How to Get Rid of Leg Hair
Shaving
This is definitely the easiest and most inexpensive way of removing leg hair. When shaving, it's best to keep it simple by using safety razors. Many experts suggest that safety razors outperformed electric shavers when it comes to leg hair removal. Of course, when shaving, the results are always temporary. The smooth-shaven legs will only last for about 2-3 days. For the most rewarding leg shave, always use a new blade and the lightest touch. Get some shaving gel or cream (not soap because it dries your skin) to apply before you shave so that your skin will retain its softness and moisture. Creams and moisturizers also serve as a lubricant to make shaving leg hair easier and preventing nicks.
To shave, you must glide the blade opposite the hair growth. Start at the ankle and slowly but surely draw the razor up the leg. Never shave sunburned or dry skin. Never shave before any exfoliating treatment. Never share razors with someone else, especially those used by a man to shave his beard. Never use a blunt razor.
Everyone who shaves may have experienced the skin irritations that come with the procedure:
Shaving Bumps – Unsightly red shaving bumps occur when the oil glands that are attached to nerve endings become irritated in the course of the shaving process. To prevent this from happening, dissolve two anti-inflammatory aspirins and glycerine drops (1-2 drops) into ¼ cup of distilled water. Apply this mixture on your legs after you finished shaving. You can also apply some antiseptic cream on your legs to avoid such red bumps.
Razor Burn – This happens to men who use razors and to you as well if you shave your legs. This occurs from pressing too hard when you shave. Glide the blade with grace and not with some kind of insane frustration. Razor burn also happens to women who shave using a dull blade or one that's been left open for bacteria to puddle. Change your razor blades at least once a week and use warm water when you shave your legs to soften your skin and hair. Don't ration moisturizers: lather up with shaving cream to sufficiently cushion your skin while you shave.
Depilatory Creams
Depilatory creams are so good especially if you're in a hurry to remove leg hair. They’re very effective and easy to apply, removing the hair just below the skin's surface without much effort. However, depilatory creams are not recommended for people who have very sensitive skin. These creams contain chemicals that are formulated to burn off hair. If you have a sensitive skin, it may not be able to tolerate the chemicals found in depilatory creams.
To use these creams, prepare a warm washcloth and apply it on the area you want to be hairless. The warm washcloth actually softens the hair on your legs and opens up the follicles, which enables quicker absorption of depilatory creams. Read the label because you shouldn’t leave the cream on your legs longer than the label recommends. When you're satisfied, apply the cream as directed. Leave it on for as long as the label suggests and wipe it off using the washcloth instead of rinsing it. You will notice that when you wipe it off, your unsightly leg hair magically disappears. Well, not really, but you're wiping off the embers of your once living leg hair.
Rinse your legs thoroughly after you're done wiping. Before you use such a product, you can test it first to check if your skin responds well to a depilatory cream. Test it by placing a patch of cream on your forehead and see if you feel irritated. If you do, never pursue using the product because it may yield you some leg discoloration, allergies or staining. If your skin breaks out, clean it at once with an anti-bacterial solution like Betadine and go to your doctor. Never apply the cream on top of minor cuts or abrasions. It's going to sting worse than a hand sanitizer applied to a wound!
Waxing
This is often done on bikini lines, but that doesn't mean you can't have it done on your legs. Waxing offers longer-lasting results than shaving, not to mention a smooth surface. Unlike shaving, in which hair grows back courser, waxing results in finer hair growth. This happens because waxing pulls the hair out from below the skin surface. You can find waxing services at your local salon. The methods allow wax to seep in, or penetrate into the hair follicles, allowing the hair to relax. Many people testified that salon waxing is not as painful as the at-home hair waxing methods. (Learn how to bikini wax)
Red Marks – These are “post-waxing” marks that are left behind on your legs after some intensive hair waxing. You can get rid of them by applying a cold compress on your skin and doing a skincare routine comprised of light moisturizers for a few days after the waxing. These red marks usually disappear after a day or so, but for the quickest fix, you can use a concealer or powder. If your waxing is done by the experts, they often have a package that includes skin care products for wax marks and they usually apply the cold compress as part of their services.
Sugaring This is an ancient method of removing leg hair using sugar that is slightly warmed and letting it stick to the leg hair. This technique is regarded to cause less discomfort than other hair removal methods. The warm sugar is applied on the leg areas and then removed by using muslin strips. This takes some practice, since this leg hair removing technique requires nimble fingers. Sugaring may not be as effective as the ordinary waxing technique, but it has more favorable results than shaving when done the right way.
Laser Hair Removal
If you are tired of removing hair every week, then it's best to consider laser hair removal. This is considered the leg hair removal technique for the busiest of people. Of course, you must consult a cosmetic studio for this procedure to be performed. Laser light passes through the skin to reach the hair follicle. The hair then absorbs the laser light and gets destroyed in the process. Hair absorbs the light due to the scientific law that light is attracted to dark colors (which is what hairs are). People who have light skin and dark hair often see the best results.
However, it's been warned that laser hair removal techniques might not be good for dark-skinned people. Since their skin is dark, it may also absorb the laser and cause some skin burning. Experts usually recommend lower-level light for customers with dark skin, but the laser becomes less effective than the standard laser for hair removal would be.
There is really no evidence to support that laser hair removal is permanent. However, it's been noted that it takes a longer amount of time for hair to grow back. It also results in the growth of much lighter hair each time leg hair is removed through laser process. This treatment is expensive, so pay attention to your instincts. Choose wisely when searching for a practitioner and know what results to expect.
The execution of flawless leg hair removal is very important because if the removal is not done properly, it can destroy your soft skin. Your legs will look rough and unhealthy, which is not a trait that many people would want. Always remember to take care of your skin.
