How to Get Rid of a Stye in Your Eye

A stye in your eye can be uncomfortable and not nice to look at. It can also cause problems if you wear contact lenses. According to WebMD, “A stye is an infection that causes a red lump on the eyelid. Most occur along the edge of the eyelid. When they occur on the inside of the eyelid they are called internal hordeolum.” The good news is, stye’s are not life threatening and will go away with the proper stye treatment. Stye’s are usually the result of a bacterial infection of the eye (Try an Eye Cleanser). A stye on the outside of the eye is usually caused by a clogged eyelash duct, while a sty on the inside of the eye is caused by a clogged oil duct. Some of the symptoms of a stye are a pimple like bump that looks red and a painful, swollen eyelid. A stye will grow for about 3 days and then break open and drain out. They usually clear up in one week. Some treatments are:
  1. Put a warm, wet compress on the eye. This will help release anything in the clogged ducts. Do this several times a day for 5-10 minutes at a time.
  2. Just leave it alone to open. It should take about a weak to clear up on it’s own. If it doesn’t clear up in that time, make an appointment to see your doctor. Don’t try to press or squeeze the stye, it should open on it’s own.
  3. Wearing contacts or I make up will only irritate the area more, so refrain from wearing them until the area has healed.
  4. There are over the counter treatments for stye’s, usually in the form of medicated pads or solutions or stye medicated drops.
  5. There are also prescription drugs that can be taken if the stye does not clear up.
  6. If all else fails, a doctor can lance a stye to make it drain faster, but this is done in a doctors office under local anesthesia. Never try to lance a stye on your own.
To prevent future stye’s:
  1. Never share cosmetic eye tools
  2. Keep your eye cosmetic tools clean
  3. Get rid of old eye makeup
  4. Try not to touch your eyes whenever possible
