How to Get Rid of Appetite Loss
Appetite loss refers to a condition where you start having no interest in consuming any type of food. Occasionally, appetite loss happens to anyone who is suffering from a particular physical disorder. Causes of appetite loss include lung and stomach cancer, duodenal ulcer, malabsorption, hiatus hernia, zinc deficiency, liver conditions, heart failure, heart disease, heart conditions, hypothyroidism, alcoholism, tuberculosis, normal aging, viral hepatitis and fever. Certian mental and emotional conditions may affect your appetite, that include anorexia nervosa, anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, depression, relationship problems, grief or loss, emotional upset, anxiety and emotional stress in general.
A brief loss of appetite is not a big deal. If you are craving something that's not on the table, then you may not have an appetite for other foods for that particular moment. You can also lose appetite after watching something that's bothering your mind and imagination. The only time you need to worry is when you don't remember the last time you wanted to eat.
Gain and Regain
Restore your eating habits by keeping these things in mind.
- Define healthy appetite. You need to know what is normal and what is not. Healthy and normal appetite allows for normal body weight. If you are consuming a wide variety of foods, it means that you have a normal appetite. A normal appetite means that you crave healthy foods. If you have an appetite for burgers and steak alone, then that is not a healthy appetite. Do not force yourself to eat and observe a healthy diet at the same time.
- Vitamins do revitalize. A daily mineral and multivitamin supplement can fix a stubborn appetite. Some nutrients can also help you regain the nutrients you have lost due to under-eating or appetite loss. In fact, some adults revitalize their appetites with zinc supplements. Consult your doctor before taking in zinc supplements to know if they are appropriate for you. Vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene, vitamin B1 and vitamin B complex are also recommended supplements. Aside from supplements, you can also take these helpful foods: wormwood, watercress, tarragon, saw palmetto, walnut, coriander, blessed thistle, chamomile, turnip, chives, savory, plum, fennel seed, fenugreek, dandelion, black pepper, chicory, rosemary, saffron, rhubarb, and caraway.
- Take a look at your medications. Ask your health care provider about the over-the-counter and prescribed medications you are taking at present. He or she may recommend other drugs that do not get in the way of your appetite because some medications may cause appetite loss.
- Eat whatever you want to eat. If food is not appealing to you anymore, then change your whole diet. Identify what is appetizing to you and then focus on eating them. If you like pizza, then eat and indulge in your favorite variety. This is not to say that you are allowed to observe any type of diet you want, be it healthy or not. If eating pizza is the only way to load your body with necessary calories and carbohydrates, then why now go for it? Your purpose, after all, is to make your food pleasantness quotient higher.
- Downsize. Try eating in smaller quantity, but more frequently. Naturally, your stomach will readily accept food as long as it is in small quantities. Downsizing is a technique you should employ to let your stomach welcome food.
- Increase water intake. Have you just started an exercise program? Are you new to working out? If yes, then the most essential nutrients you have to have is water. If you get dehydrated, then that's when appetite loss comes in. Make it a habit to drink six to eight glasses of water a day, with eight ounces each glass. Drink water before and after your work out session.
- See a doctor. If you can't regain your lost appetite after two weeks, you need to have a checkup. Your doctor may diagnose some physical problems that contribute to your appetite loss. He or she may employ treatments if you are diagnosed with a problem. You may discover that you have a low-grade infection, and all you need are the right antibiotics.
- Double check your mental health. Depression causes appetite loss and with that, you will need antidepressant medications. Bring your mental health to its normal state and sooner or later, you will find yourself craving something again.
- Ask for professional help. Sometimes, you don't know the real problem until you let the pros help you. You may not know it but you may be suffering from an ailment such as anorexia nervosa or bulimia. Self-help remedies won't take you a step closer to recovery. Sometimes, hospitalization is needed. You need to seek professional help for intense therapies from a nutritional and psychological standpoint. You may also need forced feeding through a gastric tube or intravenous injections.
- Speed up metabolism. If your appetite loss is at a physical level, exercise to improve your appetite. Exercising speeds up your metabolism and makes you want to eat. Weight gain supplements will also help.
- Spiritual community. Seek the help of life coaches and counselors. You may need people to help you realize your emotional, mental and physical needs. Your positive attitude will help you let go of whatever is bothering you so you can regain your appetite for food.
