How to Remove Ear Wax

The more wax you get, the better it is to get rid of the stuff regularly to forestall any infections. When you shower, tilt your head slightly and briefly to let a little hot water run in one ear. Tilt your head to the other side to let the water escape. Do the same with the other ear. This may heat the wax to the point where it melts and runs out of your ears on its own. You may need nothing more.

But the stuff could still continue to build up. Fear not, there’s more you can do, assuming you don’t have a perforated ear drum, something your doctor would apprise you of after sticking a little scope in your ears.

If you’re too much of a cheapskate to go to the pharmacy and purchase some ear drops, you can heat olive oil to body temperature (no hotter!) and put a few drops in each ear. Use a bit of cotton to keep the stuff from running out and staining your collar. Do this for three or four days, then use an ear syringe or a large hypodermic syringe (without the needle, of course) to flush your ears with tepid water. Make sure you don’t get the tip of the syringe too close to your eardrum, which could make a blast of water dangerous.

At the drugstore, you can purchase a kit containing ear drops, an ear syringe, and a basin for catching the drainage. If you don’t know how to squeeze an ear syringe by yourself or are afraid of damaging your ear drum, go to the doctor’s office, where a nurse will clean your ears for you. They love doing things like that. If it’s still not budging, they may try to suction out the stubborn wax. Alternatively, the doc may simply go in with a little hook and pull it out. Don’t try that at home, people.

Warning!: Do not use Q-tips to clean your ears! In fact, don’t so much as stick your finger in there, as good as that may feel, because any of those things could damage your eardrum. At a minimum, they will be counterproductive and only push the wax deeper into the ear canal.

Ear Wax Candles?

Ear candling as a technique for removing ear wax is a practice that has been traced back over 4500 years ago. It is still practiced today, much to the horror of otolaryngology specialists who consider it dangerous. It must be performed by a specialist using special “candles” which are cotton sheets that have been soaked with beeswax in the shape of a cone. The cone is placed in your ear and set afire to burn slowly. After a some time, the specialist extinguishes the fire. Heat convection supposedly wicks out whatever wax, debris, and microorganisms have lodged in your ears, and the flame conveniently turns the exudates into vapor. There is no pain involved. The treatment may be completed by putting drops of hydrogen peroxide in the ears. Proponents claim that a candling every six months can relieve not only ear pain, reduced hearing, and balance difficulties, but also sinus conditions and migraines. Opponents claim that a treatment every six months is merely an effective way of cleaning out your wallet.

i have two children and they both have extremely small ear canals and over active wax production-apparently its heriditary, their dad has the same problem- anyway we had to go to the doctor to have a large pice of wax removed. it had attached itself to the inside of his ear canal so had to be scraped off the side of his ear canal..it was extremely painful for him. he was only 3.=( but the doctor said it is easily controled. mix a solution of 1/4 warm water at least body temp, and 3/4ths hydrogen proxide. then take a plunger and use small pulses of pressure to push the mixture into your ear, the proxide will curl the wax and turn it white so its easy to see and the warm water will help loosen it up so its easy to remove. if you have a chronic problem first have a doctor remove whatever is in your ear just in case it is attached to your ear cannal. if this is so, this technique will not work. but once your doc clears your ears if you do this once a week and remove the white wax from inside your ears the problem should stay under control. it has worked for us for about a year or so now. hope you all find some relief.

In 1992, and i was a grown women, I was sent to a speacialist and he put a tube in my right ear, wow what a difference that made. Well the tube fell out with no problems, end of story right, wrong. Ten years later had a terrible ear ache, went to dr, but instead of a tube he went for the vaccum thingy and started to suck what ever was in my ear out. Well what ever he got out of my ear it wasnt good because it plugged up his vaccum thingy and he quit, great. I still couldnt hear, so i asked him what i could use to keep the wax down and he said, use a mixture 1/2 alcohol and 1/2 vinager and use a dropper and put into your ear. I have tryed it but not long enough, so anyway good luck.

My left ear, and it’s ALWAYS the left ear is so clogged. I’ve been to the doctor and she said to get the eardrops at the pharmacy. What a joke. I still cannot hear and I have been using the drops and then rinsing my ear out and I STILL cant hear!!! This is driving me absolutely out of my mind. And the whole ear candling thing is just not an option, I’ve heard horror stories about that. H E L P ! !

i live by ear candles, but they are hard to find altho i think i saw some at GNC the other day, just too cheap to buy them. keep dreaming when if you think what’s in the candle is candle wax…i can promise you, that stuff came from my ears (you’re talking to someone with a history of wax plugs who’s frequently had them pulled out of her ears in random parts of the world and been confronted by disgustingly large, disturbingly colored, conical shaped ear wax). My head always feels lighter and my sinuses clearer after candles. You won’t regret trying them–you’ve just got to do it right. Make sure there’s a vacuum–hold your finger over the bottom end until a stream of smoke comes out when you take it off. Then listen as the wax is sucked out of your ear.

OMG! my ear hurts so bad! it feels terrible does anyone have any answers for me. Please! I beg OF U> PLEASE

  6. Cheryl Says:

Just flush them out with water frequently, I guess. One of my ears holds water and the other doesn’t, but I try to use just water. It’s cheaper, and less ticklish, also just as clean. I have to do that every couple of weeks. It is awful.

  7. Ashley Says:

Whatever you do, don’t let the doc go in with a hook/spoon. It hurts so bad and it actually made my ear bleed.

  8. mike Says:

ear candles have been proven in several places to be a complete hoax, 4500 years or not…they do nothing. the wax you see you think they took out is wax from the candle itself. some magazine (skeptical inquirer?) did a test over a glass or a test tube with nothing in it and the ear candle still produced “ear wax”

Oil of Oregano is THE BEST. It not only dissolves the ear wax and allows it to drain out of the ear.. but it fights infections and cleans out the ear.

  10. Terri Says:

I just had to go to the physician because of an ear ache and a totally blocked ear, I couldn’t hear well at all. The physician’s assistant looked through the otoscope at my ear and said it was fully plugged with wax. For some reason in my 40s, I started having ear problems and had never had them before, but my sisters and Mother had always had them! Well, anyways, my ear (its always the left), was cleaned out with warm water and hydrogen peroxide with a big syringe (with a pink plastic tip on it). It felt amazingly wonderful, and alot of brown waxy stuff came out. The PA thought it had something to do with my sinuses, and I’ve been using my Netti pot with warm saline water to irrigate frontal sinuses and everything feels great! I do have a genetic tendency to have this problem plus tiny ear canals, but I’ve reading posts on using hydrogen peroxide on a periodic basis to keep the wax down to a non-problematic level. I just hate bothering a clinic for something as simple as a clogged ear because of excessive ear wax. I wish everyone the very best and know just how painful this stuff is, I suffered with it for a couple of months before seeking medical attention.

  13. patrick Says:

I tried, the ear wax removal kits from the drug store. Worked a little, but after i just could not hear, I went to the ENT ( ear Nose and throt) doctor, he used some vac and i think a water spray, was very noisey!!! but i felt great after, I can now hear, was well worth the 60 bucks. I would go back next time i get this problem. And I hate going to the doctor.

  14. naomi Says:

help!!! m y ears are soooo sore and well i try to clean them they are really sore what shall i do?? my ear goes all weird hen i go in the bath or the shower iev tryed all of the ear drops and the only thing that works is soda of bicarbonate drops and olive oil but i cant get hold of any were can i get some?

  15. Jamie Says:

Don’t use ear drops from the pharmacy. They contain bleach which irritates your ear canal. Use olive oil for a week to soak the wax, then go to your doctor and ask to have your ears syringed. It takes 5 minutes and doesn’t hurt a bit, actually feels surprisingly pleasant.
