How to Get Rid of Excessive Hair
January 27th, 2009 by admin
Baldness is a common hair problem that people deal with everyday. Your officemate, friend, father or teacher may be suffering from it. Sufferers usually deal with it by using the right shampoo and techniques found mostly from the Internet.
But what if things go in reverse and you're now dealing with excessive hair? How do you get rid of it and what are the treatments available?
Excessive Hair Growth
Excessive hair growth in women is called hirsutism. If you are suffering from hirsutism, you experience excessive hair growth on your chin and sometimes on your chest. Women who are suffering from excessive hair growth want to get rid of this condition right away because they feel unfeminine.
Even women, have male hormones or androgens in their bodies. If the blood levels of your male hormones are elevated, you develop hirsutism, among other conditions. Hormone levels are usually normal, but when your hair follicles are hypersensitive to androstenedione and androgens testosterone, then you develop excessive hair growth. You also have androgen-secreting tumor to blame. A condition experienced by some women, called polycystic ovarian disease, can also be responsible for the overproduction of your hair.
Excessive hair growth only becomes a problem if you think hair grows on areas where hair does not normally appear, especially if this condition is accompanied by other symptoms like acne, lack of menstruation and irregular period. If this is the case, you should visit an endocrinologist, gynecologist or dermatologist as soon as possible.
You can also resort to plucking, shaving, waxing or using hair depilatories to get rid of excessive hair. Below are some tips on how to do all of these methods properly.
Plucking: Be Patient
Some call it tweezing, while others refer to it as plucking. When you pluck, you yank hair strands one by one. Plucking is the cheapest way to get rid of excessive hair since all you need is a pair of tweezers and tons of patience.
Plucking can be painless at first but you'll get the hang of it over time. There are many ways to lessen the pain. For instance, you only need a good pair of tweezers so that you can remove the growing hair from roots to tips. If you use an inferior tweezer, there's a chance that you'll break off the strands, or worse, tweeze your skin, which can lead to further problems. Following the direction of hair growth when plucking is also effective in reducing the pain you get from this activity. You can also rub some ice over the area where you will pluck hair to numb your skin and reduce pain.
Plucking is perfect for you if you are patient enough to remove individual strands. If you don't have enough patince, then you may want to try shaving.
Shave and Save
If you want a quick fix for excessive hair, go for shaving. Like plucking, shaving is also inexpensive. It is recommended for large areas with excessive hair like your legs and arms, among others. Can you imagine plucking each hair strand on your legs?
Should you decide to shave, make sure you wet your skin first. Moisture and heat will soften your skin, making it easier for you to shave. Aside from that, since shaving is a natural exfoliant, you will only end up clogging the razor with dead skin if you shave dry.
Don't be afraid to experiment with razors too. You have to try different types and brands to find the perfect one for you. Spring-mounted multiple blades are great choices for a razor, especially those that have pivoting ends and lubricated strips. If you already know which shaver to use, you still need to change cartridges or razors regularly.
If you develop excessive hair on your legs, you have to shave from your ankles, upwards. For your underarms, you can shave in any direction. For best results, apply moisturizer or oil on the shaved area.
Today, there are many types of shavers available on the market, some of which are intended for specific areas only. The downside of shaving is that you need to repeat shaving on a regular basis since hair will grown back naturally.
Waxin' Hot
Waxing involves applying warm wax on the part where unwanted hair grows. In this method, you will have to wait for the wax to harden. If the wax is already hard, your next step is to pull it back. The hair will stick to the wax allowing you to have smoother skin. Like plucking, waxing removes your hair up to the roots although this method is more painful than any other hair removal method. In some cases, your skin may turn red from the procedure, but don't worry about it because the pain is just normal and temporary. You also have to be careful with the hot wax as it can burn the skin. Since waxing is painful, it is best to have this done by a professional.
Hair Depilatories: Easy Way Out
Hair depilatories can help dissolve your hair on the surface of your skin. Technically, hair depilatories are applied on the skin and work by breaking down the hair's protein structure. These products are available on the market and may come in the form of lotions, gels or creams. Paying a skin care professional to do this for you is not necessary at all, because it is as easy as applying cream or lotion all over your skin.
Hair depilatories are inexpensive, easy to use, painless and can be considered a quick fix. Sometimes though, depending on the quality of cream you are using, hair may grow again in a matter of hours or in several days.
Hair loss and excessive hair growth are two hair problems you wouldn't wish for anyone to have because it's your crowning glory that's at stake. Since you can't choose your problem, you have these tips to give you enough knowledge on how to deal with excessive hair growth gracefully.
