Mid-afternoon lethargy is known as post-lunch dip and is considered a function of the human biological clock. Based on studies, people naturally feel sleepy twice during a 24-hour period—from 2:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

To make things worse, consuming lots of carbohydrates during lunch actually triggers afternoon dip to an almost uncontrollable degree. This dip often subsides around 3:00 p.m., when the body comes out of its natural slumber.
