How to Get Rid of Stretch Marks
1. What are Stretch Marks?
Strech marks are scars left behind when skin is overstretched, and fibers in the middle layer (dermis) have broken. They most often occur during pregnancy, bodybuilding, extreme weight gain, occasionally puberty and are usually found on the abdomen, breasts, buttocks, legs, and upper arms. Fresh stretch marks appear initially as red lines and then slowly fade to a pale white color over the course of several months. While it is possible to reduce and even eliminate the appearance of stretch marks, it is much easier to prevent them.
2. How to Prevent Stretch Marks
Since stretch marks occur when skin is stretched to the limit of its elasticity – it follows that the best prevention is either to reduce the cause of stretching or to increase elasticity (or both).Increase your Skin's Elasticity
- Skin Creams and Lotions – Lotions containing cocoa butter are rumored to not only help reduce stretch marks, but to help prevent them entirely. Any cream or oil that is made specifically for the prevention or treatment of stretch marks will help keep your skin healthy and elastic. If you are pregnant or breast feeding consult your doctor first as lotions can contain ingredients that may be passed to your unborn baby or into breast milk.
- Vitamin A, E & C – Supplementing these vitamins may help increase the strength and elasticity of the collagen within your skin and reducing your chance of forming stretch marks.
- Stay hydrated. Ever try to squeeze a dry sponge?
3. Stretch Mark Removal
If you’re more concerned with getting rid of stretch marks than preventing them, read on. There are many methods to choose from, ranging from home remedies for stretch marks, to medical and cosmetic procedures. You will notice that every single one of these remedies also helps promote the overall health of your skin – the healthier your skin is, the better it can heal itself. Always consult your doctor before undergoing any treatment, especially if you are pregnant or nursing.
Home Remedies to Remove Stretch Marks
- Time – Stretch marks, like all types of scarring fade over time.
- Retin-A (Tretinoin) – 0.1% Tretinoin creams have been shown to significantly reduce the appearance of stretch marks in a study published in the May 1996 Archives of Dermatology. See your doctor for a prescription. These creams work best when used on fresh stretch marks. WARNING: Do not use tretinoin treatments if you are pregnant of breast feeding as the active ingredient may be passed to the unborn child or the breast milk.
- Exfoliate daily – use a loofah or scrunchy to remove daily.
- Vic’s Vapor Rub – Many people have reported success using Vic’s Vapor rub by applying it to a washcloth or paper towel and rubbing it forcefully into the scarred skin on a nightly basis for a few weeks.
- Increase Circulation – by taking hot baths and massaging the areas regularly.
- Tanning – Go sunbathing! Tanning can diminish and even eliminate minor stretch marks. Be sure to use sun screen. (For information on Tanning, learn the guide to Tanning)
- Vitamin E Gel – Break open vitamin E capsules and rub the oil into the skin over the stretch marks daily for 2 weeks.
- Unstretch the skin – After the skin returns to its normal, unstretched size, stretch marks often become nearly invisible.
- Stretch Mark Creams and Lotions – Using stretch mark creams and stretch mark lotions that heal and beautify your skin can reduce the appearance of stretch marks. The following ingredients are widely accepted as beneficial for this purpose:
- Cocoa butter
- Rose hip oil
- Emu oil
- Jojoba oil
- Castor oil
- Shea butter
- Vitamin A
- Vitamin E
- Vitamin C

Medical Procedures for Stretch Marks
- Microdermabrasion – Microdermabrasion is a cosmetic procedure popular in spas and salons where the top-most layer of skin is removed by chemical or mechanical means.
- Endermologie – Endermologie machines massage and work the skin in order to increase circulation and expel toxins.
- Laser Therapy – There are several different types of stretch mark laser treatments available that can help reduce the appearance of stretch marks and heal you skin. See your dermatologist for the latest information on these methods.
- Cosmetic Surgery – Strech marks typically appear below the belly button and the only way to remove abdominal stretch marks is with a tummy tuck. During a tummy tuck some of the skin below the belly button is removed. For stretch marks that appear on other areas of the body cosmetic plastic surgery can help depending on the areas affected. * If you like reading this article you'll surely read how to get rid of butt stretch marks, how to get rid of stomach stretch marks and how to get rid of stretch marks from pregnancy.

Sometimes if you put mayo where it is it goes away for real
My names lauren and i am 15. I have no boobs and a big bum , i recently have started to notice that my inner thighs and around my bum are starting to develop stretch marks. Not feeling so fond of them. anyone got any tips to get rid of them that isnt expensive?
I am 15, everyone says I’m very thin, I’m 5′10″ and I have stretch marks on my hips, so I think it’s due to puberty more than anything. I’ve been reading these comments and the cocoa butter treatment seems to come up a lot so I’m going to try that soon and hopefully it works. It doesn’t have to do with my bf or what other people think I just don’t like having to see them and I want to do something about it. If I can make them go away it would be a huge confidence boost. If anyone knows there’s something better I can do for them at home please let me know. {just post a comment @Nadine} Thank you!
This one time at band camp my weiner started itching so i scratched it then went to the doctors and found out i have crabs so that wasnt good then i scratched them again and some dogs have tails
Im 13. ive had stretch marks since i was about 11. im over 5′7 and i have big boobs a big bum but im not chubby or anything. i have sretch marks on my boobs butt knees and arms. none of the girls at my school have any, even the larger girls. my mum says its my skin but what can i do to help them disapear. ive tryed bio- oil but it doesnt work
Its possible to improve stretch marks and if they are fresh there is a better chance of them responding quickly to treatment. The Eporex mesotherapy would be the best treatment for stretchmarks whereby herbal essences and Vit C are introduced to the area to be treated through transdermal delivery and these will help the skin to regenerate.
I’m a 20 year old female and I’ve had stretch marks since i was about 14 or 15, I think. I just want all of you younger girls and guys on here to realize that you are beautiful just the way you are! I still feel self conscience about mine every once in awhile too; but just coming on here has helped me! I mean there’s over 20 pages of males and females saying that they have stretch marks! Just think how many people have them and haven’t been to this site before?! I just don’t want any of you to think that you’re ugly or less beautiful than anyone else. And if you’re worried that your boyfriend or girlfriend will laugh or make fun of you for having them, then they don’t deserve you anyway!! You are you, and that is the best thing you can be =) I hope you all have a great day and remember to SMILE!!
I am 17 and never had stretch marks before up until i got pregnant. i had my baby recently about 3 weeks ago and now i have these ugly stretch marks on my belly. i have a flat belly again now and i am able to wear my belly button ring again but my stretch marks are hidious. ive been using vitamin E oil for about a week now and have noticed a dramatic lighting of the stretch marks.
I am 14 going on 15 and i’m about 5′6′ and my dads side of the family has bad obesity problems and i’m a big boned girl who’s a little over weight. I have stretch marks on my stomach and under my arms, on my sides and my right before my thighs.I really hate them and i want them gone after reading all these comments i really got thinking and i’ve heard cocoa butter lotion works fade the stretch marks……so yaaaa.
I’m 18, 5′6, and thin, and I have stretch marks. The moral of the story: Everyone gets them, so don’t be ashamed or think they make you look gross. If anything, just look at them as “battle scars” of all the crap girls have to go through during/after puberty. It just goes to show your boyfriend that you’re just as strong as he is, and proud of it. And if they really bug you, Bath&Body Works makes a Shea Butter & Almond Oil Body Butter that works miracles… my little sister developed quickly from “little girl cute” to the curviest girl I know, and had the marks to show for it, till she used the shea butter/almond oil stuff. Now there’s not a mark on her.
