junkAs you move from one place to another, you usually end up having two types of piles: the keep pile and the toss pile. You need to clean your apartment before you move to another one, so what, among your things, should you classify as keep and toss?

When you say “keep pile”, these are the things that you will bring with you to your new home. Meanwhile a “toss pile” refers to a pile full of your once-prized possessions. In short, a “toss pile” is a pile filled with junk.

You think getting rid of junk is easy? Why do dumpsters and junk disposal companies exist if you can do it by yourself? Since you can’t do it all alone, here are some ways to get rid of your junk effortlessly.

Boot it Out Online

How to Get Rid of Junk

electronicIf you go online and look closely, you will discover that there is indeed a junk-selling phenomena on the Internet. You will find most organizations or websites based in the United States among many other locations abroad. Try checking bulletin boards to see what locations have junk-selling activities. You can post and browse forums to get some tips on what junk you can sell. Usually, you will find pieces of furniture for sale. Others sell electronics, bikes and books. You’ll never know how much money you can make from your collection of oven mitts, a broken television, an old baby swing, or just about any item that you don’t like anymore.

If you don’t want to put a fixed price on your junk, you can find other websites where you can attract at least a bid and play a bit of a game with potential buyers. If not, you can always check out the websites of your local newspapers and check the classified ads section. You can place an online advertisement but you need to pay a specific fee. Placing an ad allows you to reach a wider audience so there is a higher chance of your junk items getting sold.

Community Effort Makes Practical Sense

garage saleIf you think you have too much junk to throw away, why not put up a garage sale? To do this, you have to make sure that your collection is extensive and you have enough time to put a price on everything. If your neighbors have items that they plan to throw away too, invite them to set up a community garage sale. If not, you can at least invite your neighbors to check out your stuff. Some sellers want to know who buys their stuff so if you are one of them, then invite your neighbors to your garage sale.

You can also literally give stuff away. You may have neighbors who would want to have your old black and white television set. You may chance upon passers by who may be interested in a piece of furniture. You may be giving someone just the exact thing he or she is looking for. You therefore hit two birds with one stone — you extend help to your neighbors and at the same time, you are given the opportunity to get rid of junk.

For A Good Cause

In the United States, popular charitable institutions like St. Vincent de Paul, the Salvation Army and Goodwill accept donations. Sometimes, they can even send people to your house to pick up the junk that you donate. In fact, a charitable institution called the Vietnam Veterans of America holds drives on a regular basis just to pick up your junk. You can call drivers from Salvation Army at 1-800-95-TRUCK to have your junk picked up. Be reminded that if you are donating to the Salvation Army, there is a minimum donation required.

Shell Out Cash, Get Rid of Trash

trashbusterIf you don’t find these methods convenient, then pay someone to toss your stuff for you. Too much junk is hard to throw away just like that. You may need the help of junk disposal services like TrashBusters and 1-800-GOT-JUNK. Your local yellow pages will show you more, so check out the services nearest your home.

Since it’s a service provided by a company, you need to pay for them to haul your junk away. Pay someone to throw your trash away if you don’t have the time to do so. Remember too that fees depend on how much junk you are getting rid of. The less junk, the lower the fee and vice versa.

Hazardous Junk

Seek the help of your local government departments in sorting things out to remove potentially hazardous substances. If not, you can also go back to where you bought your electronic equipment because the company can definitely help you with the disposal or better yet, donate it to someone else.
