How to Get Rid of Acid Reflux

1. What is Acid Reflux?

Acid reflux is a painful condition that affects millions of people all over the world. It is caused when your stomachs digestive acids make their way up into the esophagus. If you suffer from acid reflux on a regular basis, there is a chance that it may be the result of another more serious condition called gastroesophogeal reflux disease; also known as GERD.

GERD is common in people of all ages. As you swallow something, it passes through the esophagus to a ring of muscles called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) which separates the esophagus from the stomach. These muscles normally open to allow the swallowed food to pass and then close immediately after its passage. In people with GERD, this muscle is weak or otherwise impaired and does not close like it should once the food has passed. When this happens acid is likely to force its way up into the esophagus and cause heart burn.

This is a destructive pattern that can actually lead to some pretty serious complications beyond the painful symptoms of heartburn. (Tips on how to get rid of heartburn)

2. What are common acid reflux symptoms?

Besides the obvious dull, burning sensation in the chest, there are other conditions that can happen as a direct result of acid reflux. These are:

Ulcers

Your esophagus is covered in a special protective lining. When the acids from your stomach back up into it on a regular basis this lining will eventually get damaged causing painful ulcers in your esophagus. If the reflux is allowed to continue you could even find yourself facing erosion of the esophagus blood vessels which results in serious bleeding. If this happens you may need surgery to repair the damage so see your doctor the instant you think you may have an ulcer.

Coughing and asthma attacks

Most people are surprised to learn that you can have an asthma attack due to GERD and heartburn. It is well known that asthma sufferers are more prone to acid reflux than non-sufferers and there are currently many studies underway to determine why. Some of the more popular theories suggest that acid in the esophagus can stimulate the nerve endings that trigger coughing (Learn how to get rid of coughs), or that the acid itself gets aspirated into the lungs. While anyone may find themselves coughing due to GERD, in most cases only people with a preexisting asthma condition will have an actual asthma attack (Tidbits on asthma, see Asthma) .

Barrett’s esophagus

In some people who suffer regularly from acid reflux disease, the cells in the lower esophagus will respond to repeated exposure to digestive acids by growing into a completely different type of cell! In most cases, these new cells are similar to cells located in your stomach or intestines in that they are better able to withstand the acidic environment they have been exposed to. While this may sound like a useful adaptation, Barrett’s esophagus can often lead to cancer of the esophagus. Barrett’s can be detected with a procedure called an endoscopy – during which a small camera is passed through the esophagus and is used to visually inspect for abnormalities.

3. Getting Rid of Acid Reflux

While heart burn is the most common symptom of acid reflux disease, not all heartburn is a result of it. Heart burn is often caused by simple things such as a poor diet or eating too close to bedtime. You can often stop heartburn by avoiding certain foods which trigger highly acidic digestive conditions such as citrus fruits, spicy foods and heavy dairy foods. These are harder to digest and can lead to an over production of acid in your stomach. Eating late at night is also something that should be avoided, as the instant you lay down to go to sleep, the only thing keeping digestive acids out of your esophagus is your lower esophageal sphincter (LES), which will open to allow gases produced during digestion to escape (when you burp) and if you are lying down, this ‘burp’ will likely be an acid bath.

Heartburn can keep you awake at night and make doing everyday things a miserable experience. The pain can be intense and at times accompanied by serious nausea.

Some popular solutions to stop heartburn:

Take an antacid

This is a good way to deal with heart burn, not necessarily with GERD. Most over-the-counter antacids are bases, which when consumed will neutralize your stomach acid. Though convenient, these are short-term solutions that will stop the pain at the expense of reducing your body’s digestive efficiency.

Tums and Rolaids

These are the most commonly used over-the-counter antacids on the market. They are calcium tablets that neutralize your digestive acids and can be effective in treating heart burn for very short periods of time. Overuse of these products can cause your stomach to adapt and produce even more acid than it normally would, creating an even worse case of reflux than you had when you started taking them.

Pepto Bismol

Pepto Bismol‘s active ingredient is Bismuth subsalicylate which is used as an anti-inflammatory, antacid, and mild antibiotic. This often lasts a little longer but can lead to constipation in some patients (Bismuth subsalicylate is also the main ingredient in Kaopectate – an anti-diarrhea medication). This over the counter medicine can be used to treat other illnesses as well, such as indigestion, nausea and diarrhea.

Gaviscon

Currently, the most commonly doctor recommended product for dealing with the symptoms of heartburn. Gaviscon contains “alginate” (alginic acid and sodium bicarbonate). When consumed these two chemicals interact to form a foam ‘raft’ that floats on top of your stomach acids acting as a barrier between them and your esophagus. It works fast and keeps working for some time.

Maalox and Mylanta

Both of these antacids contain Magnesium Hydroxide (milk of magnesia) and aluminum hydroxide. Milk of magnesia is normally used to treat constipation but is also effective against heartburn. The addition of magnesium hydroxide counteracts the unwanted laxative effects making these products effective antacids.

Alka-Seltzer

Alka Seltzer’s active ingredient is sodium bicarbonate (baking soda). It works by increasing the alkalinity of your stomach’s contents.

4. Getting rid of GERD

You can’t really get rid of GERD, but you can certainly manage it. Here are some good options to review with your doctor:

H2 antagonists

Do not confuse these with antacids; they work in an entirely different fashion. These are drugs that work to block the normal function of histamine in the stomach – reducing total acid production. H2 antagonists should be taken before meals and can prevent heartburn for nine to twelve hours at a time giving the esophagus some time to heal itself even after it has been damaged by previous acid reflux. Use of H2 antagonists had been steadily declining in favor of more effective drugs called proton pump inhibitors (Next section).

These are the most common H2 antagonists in use today:

  • Cimetidine (Tagamet, Dyspamet)
  • Ranitidine (Zantac)
  • Famotidine (Pepcid)
  • Nizatidine (Axid)
  • Ranitidine bismuth citrate (Pylorid)

Proton Pump Inhibitors

The cells in your stomach that produce digestive acids are called gastric parietal cells. The part of these cells that excretes acid is the proton pump. Proton pump inhibitors (in case you haven’t guessed already) work by disabling the proton pumps directly, stopping acid production by the gastric parietal cells that have been infiltrated by the drug. These drugs often need to be taken for 2-3 days before results can be seen and are available by prescription only.

Proton pump inhibitors to ask your doctor about are:

  • Omeprazole (Losec)
  • Esomeprazole (Nexium)
  • Lansoprazole (Zoton and Prevacid)
  • Pantoprazole (Protium)
  • Rabeprazole sodium (Pariet)

5. Preventing Acid Reflux

The healthiest way to avoid heartburn is to modify your diet for acid reflux prevention:

By eating more of certain foods and less of others you may be able to control your heart burn and your GERD without the need for any drugs at all. Here are some guidelines to get your started. Experiment and discover what your triggers are.

  • Avoid citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, and grapefruits. These foods are high in acids and can cause heartburn. More acid in your stomach means a greater chance of painful and debilitating heart burn. Tomatoes and cranberries should also be avoided for the same reasons.
  • Foods that are high in fat content should also be reduced, as should dairy. These heavy foods take much longer to digest, produce more gas during digestion and require more acid to do the job.
  • Avoid caffeine in all of its forms. This means no less coffee, tea and soda! Coffee and soda are especially acidic in nature and can lead to serious heartburn complications. If you have difficulties kicking this habit, learn how to stop drinking coffee.
  • Don’t overeat! More stomach real estate taken up by food means less room for digestive acids and a higher risk of reflux.

If you have heartburn more than twice a week, it is time to see your regular physician for an examination. The doctor may be able to determine just what is causing your heart burn and help you choose an appropriate course of action.

  • Drink 4 table spoons of apple cider vinegar, it will burn for about 4 minutes but your symptoms will be gone for the entire day and next morning. Apple cider vinegar also increases your digestive systems efficiency.

  • I chew ice that is not filtered and has traces of chlorine. This is a base that counteracts with the acid. I am losing weight and see a marked improvement. I go to bed at midnight and have my last meal or snack of anykind by 6pm. This helps but Nexxium gave me my life back.

  • An ENT encouraged me to drink 8 glasses of water every day. Not drinking enough water is a big cause of acid reflux.

    It really makes sense – by diluting the stomach acid it just makes sense that this will help.

  • i have been suffering 4m severe acudity problems from d last few years,nothing much helped but still having one slice of garlic empty stomach does help..

  • It is very hard to say what works and what does not.But still I found taking i glass of water with honey and lemon got rid of the acidity.Also drinking a lot of warm water will decrease the acidity.Some people say even ginger is very good for acidity as it improves the digestive system.

  • do pranayam yoga of ramdev swami especially the kapalbhati yoga. i have been suffering from this problem 10 years and this yoga for just five minutes took this problem away.

  • MUSTARD!? Just the thought of swallowing an entire teaspoon of mustard when my heartburn is bad makes me want to vomit. I would not recommend that!

    Zantac and TUMS work well for me, but I a msure if I ate better, my problem would not be nearly as bad with heart burn and acid reflux.

    It makes sense that TUMS and Zantac can make heartburn worse over time, as it forces the body to make more acid, but they do work and I could not sleep without them! I have noticed, though, that since I have been taking both of these medications for a long time, my digestion has slowed significantly.

  • I used Ginger Juice (look it up on the internet, Dr Stoll web page) and got a lot of improvement. I went on a diet and stopped eating Sugar or Flour and My acid reflex went away in one day

  • eat a banana, its a natural antacid or eat plums they are high in fibre, so good for digestion.

    Plums have been really helpdul in my case, I eat a plum after evening meal, does help.

  • for heartburn, i drink some milk, so did my grandfather.It works.For acid reflux, my husband gave me a glass of baking soda and water.About a 1/2 a teaspoon in a glass of water

  • First of all, STOP drinking and coffee, tea, soda, alchohol. Second, yogurt had active bacteria cultures that promote good digestion. A couple spoonfuls of yogurt a day makes the burn go away.

  • Onset diabetes can cause suger control problems which damages the nerves in the stomach. This can cause gastroparesis, or delayed emptying of the stomach. When you move around or lay down with food in your stomach, the acid goes up into your upper stomach and esophagus.

    Get your blood sugar under control with a good chromium supplement and avoid dairy products (stimulate acid production), spicy food, alcohol, sugar, and caffeine. An acid reducer a couple times a week helps as well. See a qualified gastrointerologist for tests if it does not go away.

  • Drink 8 ounces of water prior to eating breakfast, lunch and dinner. Afterwards, drink another full 8 ounces of water. This will decrease all symptoms 7 fold.

  • I drink a few sips of caffeine free ginger ale…or water works too. Just to get the digestion process run better.

  • I drink a little bit of caffine free ginger ale, eat a few tums, and drink a bottle of water…does it work? I take Zantac 150 as well so your best bet is to try sum of these remdies out AND visit ur doctor!!

  • None of these things seem to work I have had this pain for over 4 days. I cant eat anything burn my throat and upper stomach burn. I went to the ER yesterday and they gave me some medicine but it didnt help at all. I feel like I’m going to die help

  • I think drinking milk helps but i want something else to help me, i dont usually get this but right now my throat and stomache are killing me and whatever i eat just comes back up. help!! i have to go back to college tomorrow =(

  • I stopped drinking coffee tea and any caffine product. I went to a natural doctor and he gave me L-Glutamine with Licorice root and aloe leaf extract it is in powder form and I mix it with water before every meal. He also gave me hemopathic nux vomica 30. It has been working and I know how you guys feel and I hate ACID REFLEX !!

  • Following things helps me with my acidity problems:
    1. Eat whole cardamom and slowly take it juice down. Can eat upto 8-10 per day.
    2. Mix jaggary with water and drink it two to three times a day.
    3. Drink a glass of 1/2 cold milk and 1/2 water with saffron, cardamom power and suger.
    4. Avoid citrus fruits, avoid curd when u have acidity, avoid butter milk and tomatos too.
    5. Eat early, avoid spicy, fried, fermented food. Eat light.
    6. White rose syrup mixed in water works marvel on acidity problem. It is not easy to find it in all countries.
    7. If nothing helps, seek doctor’s advice.

  • Donot eat and lay down. Drinking water really is like the answer to everything. Avoid stewed, or oily foods. Try not to inhal too much food being cooked before you have to eat cause the scent stimulates the production of gastric juices before you even eat. Hope these help.

  • In my experience heartburn and acid reflux _really_ only feel like they are caused by acid, but they can be caused by something else. I used to have chronic gastritis (you can only imagine how many time I had heartburn…) and the moment I changed my diet and stopped eating sweets it all went away. I had no problems for 24 years, and this year I started to eat sweets again and the heartburn and acid reflux started. I had it every night. I went to the chiropractor, and he would adjust the hernia (one cause of the acid reflux) but by the same night it would be back again. He asked me: how are you doing with your minerals? I said: I take them faithfully every day. He said: double it up. I did, and since then I had heartburn/acid reflux 2 times, when I ate chocolate. I plan to get rid of the chocolate.

    None of the other folk remedies or medications every helped… I feel good now, thank G-d.

  • Avoid all type of dairy, eating late, eating more when you r suffering.Try to swallow your own saliva, whatever u eat should be eaten very slowly mixing your saliva as more as possible, avoid constipating food. And last not but the least try to learn and do pranayam on empty stomch daily in the morning. Stay away from Garlic, ginger, spices and mustard when acid levels are really high.
    These things helped me a lot.Seek doctors help.

  • I see a lot of comments that contradict previous ones. It looks like drinking more water (warm water) is one easy remedy. It’s always really bad for me in the morning, no matter what I eat. Be it cereal with soymilk or pancakes with syrup (the syrup seems to be bad for it). I don’t know why some of you are suggesting to drink milk when the article clearly states that heavy dairy can irratate the symptoms. I wonder if soy milk falls in that assessment.

  • try taking protonix this is what has worked for me but now I have a lot of drainage in my throat and cannot swallow. please let me know what to do whith this im really suffering.

  • Just a spoon full of sugar!(or so) Works great for GERD. Once you take the sugar give it about a minute and it should be cured.

  • DO NOT eat mustard!! It will only contribute to more acid and gas generation.
    Pranayam is the best way out of acidity… and yes even GERD. I am a GERD sufferer and my problems went down with constant pranayam practice. But oh well I’m again bothered cuz I never bothered to continue & my food habbits went for a toss. Here’s what I’d recommend:-

    1. Control your food habbits. Eat less. Eat often. Don’t cross the 9 PM mark for dinner.

    2. Alcohol consumption = No!

    3. Smoking = NO NO!!!

    4. Drink lots of water

    5. PRANAYAM!

  • Because of all the chewing and saliva production, chewing gum after meals tricks your stomach into thinking it has more digesting to do. It really helps with acid reflux. I would stay away from peppermint flavored gum though b/c peppermint numbs the flap that holds in your stomach acid.

  • Acid indigestion and heartburn are not the same as Acid Reflux. Please re-read sections 1 & 2 above!!! Acid Reflux or GERD is a physiological issue and left untreated it can cause esophageal cancer.

    If you have symptoms of GERD you MUST SEE A DOCTOR. The only way to diagnose esophageal cancer at this time is by endoscopy. This cancer is the fastest growing cancer in the western world and one of the most lethal because once you have symptoms it is most likely to be a late stage cancer. I watched my husband die from this disease after spending years doing everything we thought we should to treat his heartburn and reflux.

  • i am suffering from accute heartburn for the last one and half years
    i am taking nexium 20 mg everyday.it is not helping much for proper cure of the problem
    i think i will get cure with yoga.by doing kpalbhati of swami ramdev i will get well soon.this is the only hope in this situation.

  • Hypnotherapy has helped me a lot. It can do a good deal to lessen the spasms that allow the acid to wash back up into the esophegas.
    So has eating less more often along with more fruit, veg, fish, lean meats & less processed foods.

  • I agree with mag’s post….GERD and AR are basically stomach killers. That why some of you are not seeing results with the “remedies” that are passed on here. Those may work if you have heartburn or indigestion problems but otherwise go see a doctor, get on nexxium.

  • I use Organic Honey bought from a Bee Keeper. Do not use the honey in a normal supermarket as the honey is boiled till all the Enzymes have been killed off. Organic Honey is still rich in these Enzymes and having too teaspoons before meals and before bedtime really helps.

    Also try DGL Licorice Tablets these can usually be found in health food shops like Holland and Barratt.

    I also believe lying down on ones left side also helps when trying to sleep.

  • Whatever you do, do NOT take oregano pills after opening them and putting in a drop of oregano oil. I used to do this, and any tomato product would cause me to be in severe pain at 2am, doubled up on the floor wishing I was dead. I stopped taking the pills and the symptoms went away.

  • Try MasticGum x2 500 mg daily on empty stomach. Gerd can be associated with
    Heliocobacter Pyluri.(H. Pyluri) terrible bacterium in stomach. MasticGum has been proven to kill those little buggers even when traditional antibiotic therapy has failed. Look up New England Journal of Medicine for details.

  • i suffer with Reflux ive been on Nexium and now on Renitidine 300Mg i find drinking alot of water after eatin try going for a walk and change you’re eating times also eat less also try eating an apple or a banana thay seem to slow my reflux down

  • I have suffered with reflux problems for quite some time and have yet to find something that helps. I also suffer from panic attaks and sometimes can be free from pain and attaks for months. I had an endoscopy 18 months ago and was given some kind of tablem treatment with 3 different tablet courses. I have been free from that feeling of needing to burp for some time, but on Tuesday it came back i pinched a breadstick and a peice of vanilla brioche on the way out to work, now everything i eat and drink gives me that full need to burp feeling and back pain. . . . . .

  • Just found out that I have esophagus ulcers…the acid reflux and pain were so bad that I ended up in emerge…3 esophagus ulcers from an antibiotic called Doxycyclin…has anyone taken this med and then felt pain? I can’t eat or it’s even hard to swallow water…very painful.

  • ok..i had actually had it since mono.. ilost 30 pounds becuase i couldnt eat. since then, i had gained pretty much all of the weight back, but i have had reflux since.. i am trying for something natural.. i take care of myself, and work out 3 times a week, everyone on here is contradicting each other!! i am so confused as to what to do, some say drink milk, eat yougurt, but others say stay away! and as for the ginger, some say eat it every day, and some say dont!! can anyone let me know what i should be eatting!!!! it would be wonderful if everyone had the same responces!!

  • Have taken Prilosec one to two pills a day for 8 years now. With flare ups I drink gingerale,water and chew gum they help!!!! someone also said suck on a hard candy no pepperment ones!!

  • I haven’t figured out yet. Still have the pain in my throat. Been drinking lots of water, eating pretzels, chewing gum and sucking on candy. It really sucks. If Ib’s cause this than they should be taken off the market. Prilosec makes my throat so dry and I feel like it is swollen sometimes. I think it made the problem worse. ER visits, Specialist, no insurance, bill collectors calling. This sucks. But this too shall pass..

  • I have had reflux for 10 years it came out of no where. First off know that everyone is different. You have to be smart and learn yourself what causes your symptoms to flare up. Here’s my experience. Do not consume anything spicy or acidy ever! Do not lift heavy weights ever! No medicines doctors prescribed worked (on me), what does help is aloe vera gel caps (on me). Stress and anxiety will bring it on big time. Once it comes on relax and keep your mind off of it and it will go away. Stressing about your pain will only make it stay around. My number one key is: When the reflux comes on keep your mind off of it, stressing and worrying about it makes it worse. In my worst episodes with it i always got better when I said screw this i am tired of worrying about it, and boom you look up and your better. Try to notice the trends, write down what makes you feel good and makes you feel bad.
    I still havent found out how to consistantly get in the gym, without my reflux hitting me and causing me to stop on and off. If anyone has experience with this let me know.

  • I can eat what I want makes very little difference for the best thing I have done is cut back on sugar loaded foods and drinks.

  • Eat Eggs (cooked)!! It will help you feel better, i got acid in my stomach and when i eat eggs, i don’t feel weird to my stomach. Thank God!!! ^_^

  • look i hve had reflux for a long time and i cant eat when i am hungry and when ever i eat my stomache doesnt digest it. wath do i need to do get rid of it i hve been to the doctor and she gave me medication and that made me have toilet problems. it made it worse i prefer you not to go to the doctors because they dont do anything. please i need help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! give me a tip please.

  • I’m having this probem for the more than 15 years. It worse in the last 5 years.

    What I had:

    Dry cough and Phlegm (especially in morning and night while on bed)
    Continuously clearning the throat

    What I did:

    A few rounds of homeopath tablets that cleared out dry caugh
    Few months back I took a month supply of antiacid plus the following
    changes in diet

    (1) no citrus based items such as oranges, lemon, cucumber, pepper (all variety) and tomoto (esp raw).
    (2) substituted cow milk with soya milk
    (3) No banana (increases mucus and phlegm).
    (4) soya based yoghurt
    (5) not taking cooked food, which is more than 24 hours old.
    (6) no sweets at all.
    (7) a few slices of pink lady apple after breakfast and evening meal.

    Although it’s been a few months since I stopped homeopath and antireflex tablets, these diet changes have worked wonders. I feel a lot better. I do not have to keep clearing my throat or go and spit the phlegm every now and then. The phelgm problem is still there in the morning and night. But it is hardly significant compared to the woes I have had all these years. I feel I can live with this, as the problem I think is insiginificant compared what it was years and months back.

    In addition to the above-mentioned diet, I am thinking of stopping coffee completely and replacing normal tea with full herbal tea.

  • I suffer from GERD which caused my esophugus lining thin.I had problem with disgestion too but i felt a bit better after I changed
    my diet lifestyle even though i lost a lot of weight..which i supposed not to..!!i did take omeprazole and domperidone before after the diagnosed.But these medications did not help me any better…
    I seek advised from my husband who happend to be a Civil Defence Reservist Medical Officer.He told me to stop taking the medicines if that make me worst.let the acid in your stomach to let it out and i would feel better even you feel the pain on your chest.
    Because all the acid in my stomach actually does not allow me to eat nothing at all.
    After that incidents i felt better and start taking food now any food but less oily food and acidic food totally out for now.
    I feel sad because of my loss weight and I have to stop my Sports activity because of this disease.
    and another problem is that everytime after food I will feel giddy like heavy on my head.
    I have tried ginger water ,it helps but temporary.
    sometimes i wonder can a doctor really help GERD sufferers by just giving medication and surgery?

    Honey, aloevera helps to reduce the bitter taste on your tongue.
    it really does.
    Heartburn ,warm water helps too.
    every meal take it slowly and relax.

  • do lots of excise it will stregthen your tummy muscles evn though u might feel terrible while your doing it. in the long run its good. eat sitting up straight! dont slouch, especially wen your eating. dont eat spicy foods! eat in small bites. drink lots of water try n aviod hot drinks as they cud irrate your stomach. i hope all of you (and me) will be cured so we get on with our lives. (p.s i’m only 14years old)

  • Reflux and peptic ulcer.

    When i have reflux, i cannot sleep at night. I salivate a lot and when i lie down i have acute heart burn. I have read most of the comments and i cannot see any cure. i will research into some local herbs and share my experiences.

  • Van Island: I had the exact same problem as u did, except i have been suffering from acidity for last 10 years. After taking doxcycyline for three days, i woke up with a weird pinchy chest pain and it hurt really bad when i swallowed somthing. through endo they found two ulcers, my GI thinks it happened because of long term acid damage to esophagus not the pills. i dont know if he is right but this thing is really hurting the qualityof my life. I am always worried about it all the time. the only think that calms the pain down is apple cider vinegar. but dont take the ACV until ur ulcer is healed, my esophagus healed in a week taking nexium and drinking only ensure.

  • I’ve had acid reflux for years and it’s terrible! I take omeprazole daily. In really bad cases, I drink Lactaid milk 3-4 times/ day and put the top part of my bed on wood blocks (sloping downward). Eating oatmeal, dry cereal and yogurt for a few days, helps as well. I try to eat the “right” foods but it’s hard (especially around the holidays!) Has anyone had or considered surgery???

  • milk has always been good for me. However even that is not working, i have tried honey, that makes me feel not too good. Physically i am fit (I run marathons) so that is not an issue. Anybody got any easy sollutions i don’t like doctors so this is my last option

  • A slice of Dry bread always works for me, just a small piece eaten without butter or marg helps, Out of all the remedies I have tried (apart from gaviscon) this works the best I think.

    Let me tell you I have a lot of empathy for all of you because I had been a victim of acid reflux for over 10 years. I’m very happy to say that I am cured. For me finding the cure was a process of experimentation and study. Like many of you I read with interest every bit of vodoo witchcraft cure I could find on the internet – basically I attempted any cure that would keep me from going to the doctor but all with no positive outcome. The worse thing I tried was drinking a warm water elixir of apple cider vinegar and honey. This set off a terrible series of problems.

    In a nut shell my recommendations for a cure:

    1) Go see a doctor right away. Get the proper diagnosis and start the correct medication. Acid reflux and GERD can produce deadly side effects in the long run. I did not like many of the medications because of the side effects and found the extra strength Zantac OTC to have the fewest long term effects.

    2) Stop eating GMO food, heavily processed food with preservatives and high sugar. Avoid the high fat and salt foods. This is all anti-nutrition and bad for your body.

    3) Avoid the caffeine.

    4) Go to the gym or find a healthy activity that helps you loose belly fat so that you can reach your ideal weight for your body size and height. THIS IS CRUCIAL TO STOPPING ACID REFLUX AND GERD and can be the most fun part of the cure too.

    5) Do not eat late at night or before going to bed. Do not spend your entire evening slouched on the couch, get upright and move around if possible and shut that tv off with all the bad news it is spouting (play a board game with someone you like – Scrabble is good).

    6) Be happy. A positive mental attitude and days with good jokes and laughter will help the spirit which also helps the body. Getting a pet kitty from the shelter to dote on did wonders for me.

    Once you are on this renewed track and you start to see results, you can slowly cut back on the proton inhibitors. Cut back very slowly, this whole process takes time: 1 or 2 years (it took at least 1 -2 years for you to develop the problem before you recognized it in the form as acid reflux).

    Today I am cured and enjoy a very healthy and active lifestyle. I know how acid reflux can dominate all of your thoughts when it comes to enjoying food. But start this process immediately and you will see long term curing results. Yes you will likely be able to enjoy a tomato or clementine in the future. Just make sure it is organic and GMO free and you don’t eat it right at bed time.

  • I’ve had acid reflux for years and have been on pepcid, nexum and currently on protonix. If I forget to take my medicine one day then I suffer for days until the medicine kicks in.
    A few months ago, I picked up a magazine and there was an article about controlling acid reflux naturally. The number 1 tip was to eat an apple a day. I thought “that’s such a cliche!” “An apple a day keeps the docter away”. But I figured I would try it the next time my acid reflux flared up. One night before bed, I started feeling the burning acid coming up. So I grab a big red apple and start eating it. Skin too. Within minutes I started to feel better. About 20 minutes later I went to bed and slept all night. I thought for sure that the acid would wake me up, but it didn’t. When I woke up in the morning, I felt great. So now I try to eat an apple a day. I only take my medicine about 3 days out of the week. I want to stop all together. I do need to change my lifestyle first. I know it is important to lose weight and I need to! I also need to stop drinking soda. I believe that if I can do that and stick with my ‘apple a day’ then I will be cured. Hope this helps someone else out too!

  • Well I would like to share what I have experienced to try to help who I can because GERD is horrible! First thing is there is no such thing as too much stomach acid and the reason you burn is becasue your stomach is too akaline. I went to my doctor and he perscribed prevacid and I lost 31 pounds in a short time and I was constapaded.My body was no absoring any food and my digestive system was not working.My bed was on blocks and I would take tums at 2am when I would wake up burning and this is while I was on the prevacid! One of the first awakening was going to see a Naturopathic Doctor who is also trained in kinesiology so your body can actually tell him what it wants with muscle testing it seemed far fetched but made sense at the same time. Then for me I was having trouble maintaining being “electrical” becasue we all are so I went to a chiropractor who is specialized in NUCCA and kinesiology. Let me just say that when my neck goes out I get heartburn but when I am in look out I feel fantastic. The reason we get heartburn is that our digestive system is working backwards and in fact you need more hydarchloric acid to help you digest and when you burp constantly it is because you are having trouble digesting your food I found that a product made by great west life called hypo d was very good at helping you digest. So from the Chiro I incorporated acupuncture which helped your body because when you get blockage in diffent meridians they need to be reset or cleared out. We have a lot to learn from chinese medicine. In my opinion the body was designed to heal itself when you cut your finger what happens it heals, so it is important to have good diet and stress is a big one as it taxes your immune system which is what heals you and fights disease so a couple of important things is that I started getting heartburn when I was 21 around the sametime my wisdon teeth got infected for the first time and lets just say when I had them pulled last year I still had infection there which my immune system was still trying to fight so when they pulled them the scrapped the jaw bone and put oil of oregeno in there which will kill anything then my immune system didn’t have to fight that anymore. So it takes time to get sick and it takes time to get better and I know it is not fun but be encouraged. Don’t drink vinegar it is like bleaching you digestive system! A good book is eating right for your blood type I try to follow it for the most part but sometimes it is hard. Another great thing i found was chlorella it is a natural algae that helps rid your body of heavy metals and toxins which are environments are full of and we can’t get away from! Just think about it we eat and drink things out of a can’s and we cook in teflon pans and stainless steel pots do you think you have a heavy metal issue? It is possible. Above all else pray God cares. Well hope this helps and I didt ramble or get off on a tangent too much. I pray you find your healing.

  • Just try an APPLE WEDGE with your meals that are spicy or your coffee etc. It worked for me and I’ve never read where anyone didn’t have luck with it. I found this on internet very quickly. I HAD severe chest pains prior and was rushed by my husband to a hospital ER and they said it was acid from the food i ate. Regular Dr put me on protonix but it didn’t cut it and he started talking about a tube down my chest if the pain still persisted, NO THANKS. Glad I read about the simple trick of and apple wedge with meals etc… Stop trying all this other silly stuff and try APPLE WEDGE FIRST.

  • Hi Every one as I read all the comments well actually those are all good for avoiding acid, but the real treatment is Drinking water early in the morning that really worked out i was suffering acidic prob since 3 years. Water is the nautural thing that can heal ur prob

  • Hello, I have Barrets Esophagas via endoscopy exam by M.D. I take Protonix but not every day…doctor says I have to take it every day for life as it may turn cancerous. I’ve had stomach problems alot in life …stress related to college etc. Drinking water works and neutralizes the acid in the body. Too many people suck down caffine pop drinks like crazy…sugar coated. I also drink coffee once a day in the morning. I don’t drink pop hardly ever. I just shake I head…real garbage when people drink pop and never water. Switch to water…milk is for babies…ask any Herb or M.D. persons. I drink water, don’t eat hot spicy foods like Tex-Mex stuff. I eat spagetti etc but drink water or beer with it. If you eat something like tomates or whatever gives you acid…don’t eat it…simple. You know more about your body than anybody…M.D. etc. I rarely drink wine as it bothers my stomach…always has as it tends to sour my stomach. If I have a stomach ache I take Rolaids…they work and are not the same as Tums that don’t work for me. If that doesn’t work I drink one or two beers…this always works for me better than any medication. I think it’s the hops that due the trick. Laugh but it works for me. Don’t eat late at night…stay away from spicy foods, lay on left side for sleeping…M.D. advice cause it reduces any acid reflex while sleeping. I’ve heard of the apple cider/vinegar treatment but never tried it. That is supposed to work. This is serious stuff….and you really may need to change some eating/drinking to improve your lives. If you do it will improve/eliminate other conditions you may have because of eating ****** food in the past which everyone is mentioning here. Check the internet on Barrets Esophagus…..serious stuff…so are ulcers which can and should be treated by the M.D. Good Luck!!

  • Anyone reading this would be completely confused by all the apparrent tips to cure acid reflux and the criticism of them from others. The fact is that if you have this problem your body is out of balance. The body’s ph neutral is slighly alkaline- alkaline forming foods are vegetables, and fruit (if it is not picked before it is ripe, which it is in this country- so avoid it) avoid the known triggers. but bear in mind that acidic foods, such as vinegar aren’t always acid forming when in the body. although lemon, for example is an acid fruit, it is alkali forming in the body- it wouldn’t cause indigestion. you need to alkalise your body by eating plenty of veg and no sweets. that tip about a tsp of sugar is a total load of rubbish, it’s simply a guess.

  • If u have a heart burn or acid reflux it is a nature of pitta in ayurveda you should eat less spicy food, drink lots of water another prescription mentioned below:-
    Triphala is an excellent Ayurvedic remedy for regulating the bowels is a combination of three fruits that tone the muscles in the large intestine. It should be used on a regular basis, however, and not just when temporary constipation occurs.

    Amla powder 3 grams mixed with 3 grams of powdered mishri (rock candy) is very helpful solution for acid reflux. Total 6 grams is dose of one time.

  • Hi, i dont really have any tips as im still trying to find one myself that works…. i am 25 yrs old and first got heartburn when i was carrying my 1st child at 21 since than i have had it everyday for the last 4 yrs and was drinking pints of milk and gaviscon only for all of it to fail, i was than put on omeprazole but that didnt work either… im now expecting my 2nd child and i am 4 months pregnant, so have pretty much hit a dead end with treatment as nothing stays down with the heartburn… was suppose to have the camera down my throat but thats on hold till after the birth and was prescribed lansprazole but told not to take them while pregnant….. have since seen another doctor who is thinking of doing triple therapy during pregnancy, im not sure what this is and if anyone had any advice for me…

  • Actually ACID will kill us all. cux there’s no CURE. I’ve already suffered 5 years and still its there. I’ve been to a thousand doctors, wasted more than $50000. FINALLY I’m willing to commit SUICIDE now. wish u all luck! BYE BYE.

  • i had really bad heartburn for years and taking omeprazole daily but still get heartburn once in a while ,so when that happen i get rid of it really quick by mixing a full teaspoon of baking soda in about an inch of water in a glass and mix to dissolve and drink quick in one shot,doesnt take long and its gone.hopefully it works for you as well.

  • my acid reflux came on suddenly 10 months ago.An improper diagnosis of pleurisy led me to lung dr. who diagnosed the acid reflux.Prilosec brought little relief but icouldnot keep food down without it.It also was causing my stomache to feel like it was caving in. Gastro dr. prescribed prevacid.I eat only very lean meat,bland vegetables,apples, bananas and things like plain rice cakes.I try not to smoke much as this makes it much worse. I have gotten alot of relief from the chest and throat pain,Ibelieve diet is large cause.however,I am now experiencing horrible stomache pain.Today I read to sprinkle gelatin on food,eat alot of bananas,and raw potato. Start with an undercooked baked potato,gradually work tour way to a raw potato in the blender.I tried the blender potato today,but my stomache is not ready for that yet.Good luck!

  • I suffered from severe acid reflux; meds were not giving much relief and my doctor was suggesting an endoscopy. Then someone suggested that wheat was a trigger. Made sense to me: when my tummy hurt, I would crave white bread toast or cream of wheat. I would feel better for awhile; then the symptoms would return, often even worse. This was a classic allergy/sensitivity pattern. I cut out wheat; the reflux improved and I lost 5 pounds (even though I replaced the wheat with other grains). I then when to a chiropractor who tested for food sensitivities using kinesiology. I cut out a long list of foods and this completely took care of the reflux — I even stopped my maintenance dose of zantac. I lost about 30 lbs. over 6 months without trying to lose weight. I’ve been able to add some foods back over time (but not wheat). It has also been helpful to pay attention to food combining; I do not eat animal protein with grains or legumes in the same meal. (See Jeanne Marie Martin’s Complete Candida Guidebook for food combining rules and other suggestions for healthy eating.) If I seriously provoke my system with a huge fatty meal before bed, I do experience some reflux, but otherwise I’ve been reflux-free for years.

  • All of those listed medicines for treating Acid Reflux are not treating the condition at all. They are only treating the symptoms and not the cause of it. For anyone who experiences acid reflux often, I recommend that you do the following. First, start taking a colon cleaner such as a fiber supplement to clean out your colon. Secondly, do not eat fruit and fruit products with any other types of food. Eat them as snacks at least 2 1/2 hours after a meal or 1 1/2 hours before a meal. Absolutely, never eat fruit right after a meal, and yes this includes pie and juice! Now, thirdly, do your best to stop eating protein foods and starched based foods at the same meal. When your body is trying to digest these two types of food together, the enzimes/acids needed to break down proteins interfere with the enzimes/acids needed to break down starches and vice versa. This creates excess acid which leads to heartburn, aka acid reflux. Protein foods are all animal products and nuts. Starch foods are all grain products, potatoes, yams, carrots, beans, except for green beans, corn, and peas. Not only will your acid reflux disappear, but as many as a hundred other health problems that you may be suffering from will likely also improve. I personally only eat meat at one meal a day and usually have two suppers so that I can enjoy meat and vegetables for one them and grains and vegetables at the other supper. Make sure the two meals are at least 2 1/2 hours apart. Our bodies are better designed to eat about 6 small meals a day, anyways.

  • I have now been sufering from acid Reflux for 2 months and and it is really distrubing my life. what i want to know is why is there no 100% cure for it and if i have the surgery, will it get rid of this acid reflux for good or not?

    also what si the main cause as i know a lot of other people with a lot wrost lifstyles than me and why arent they suffering from this

    To be honset i enjoy drinking and smoking shisha every now and again and will i ever be able to enjoy these again?

  • You could do all of those things….or simply take Apple Cider Vinegar 3 times a day for two weeks to either get rid of it all together or put it into remission

    the vinegar portion of the product is an amino acid and acts as fuel for your body to balance out your PH and your stomach acids correctly…and also fuel for your body that is used to correct complications in the body…acid reflux isn’t permanent just a condition just like having a cold, headache, or fever.

  • I tried many different treatments, including: fiber, probiotics of different kinds, d-limonine, antacids, etc.

    Nothing really worked.

    But I noticed that it got worse when I was constipated, so I started taking triphala for constipation.

    It worked for the constipation, but when I stopped taking it the constipation returned.

    So I started taking it every day – two pills in the morning and two in the evening (the brand I use is called “triphala gold”).

    After 2 or 3 weeks something amazing happened… NO MORE GERD!!!!

    My reflux was GONE. For the first time in over a year.

    Now it’s been a year and I sometimes get a tiny bit of reflux, but it’s still basically gone. Triphala is keeping it entirely under control.

    I’m so happy and I hope it keeps up!

  • I eat only 1000 calories a day and I still feel puke come up (it doesn’t reach my mouth) and I have heartburn. How do I have acid reflux if I only eat 1000 cals per day? Do I really need to see my DR, I’m only 15.

  • Well a few weeks before reading this I got sick and I puke pratically my whole stomach out. At the time I didn’t realize it but I started not to have all the symptoms of GERD. So then I look online and see if I can find anything about what was going on. I have had asthma attacks and heartburn and like the burning sensation for a few years now. Noe sinsemilla reading l this I am pretty sure I have it but I want a home remidy for it. What should I use?

  • I have acid reflux with IBS for more than a year,i ve taken all medications and have also changed my lifestyle but unfortunately no avail.I dont know how i will live up with this problem.

  • I suffer with peptic ulcer for years.When I had medical aid I could afford to get losec but now I am unemployed.I go to a govment hospital and they give me the cheap tablets that dont even help.Its called taggamet.
    Cant the hospital give me something better so I can fine some relief.I go to Edenvale hospital in Gautang S/Africa.

  • Hi I’m 19 and have had a real bad year, starting with anxiety and then my whole body aching and thinking I’m going to die, as soon as one symptom goes away something worse happens!!!! about a month ago i started having heartburn a week later It followed with a chocking sensation after eating and soon after a lump in my thought and being sick little bits of food and having difficulty breathing, I have lost my appetite because of this and I’m scared of eating and I am so down at the moment. Its really hard seeing my doctor and i usually have to wait a month, i just wish i knew how to be back to normal.

  • I highly recommend Triphala as well. I’ve had the globus sensation for over two months and finally last night, I tried the Triphala. This morning, I woke up with that sensation again but after I went to the bathroom a few times, the lump in the throat feeling pretty much disappeared. I will continue the Triphala since it is known to effectively help with acid reflux. I wish I had tried it sooner than now. Try it, you have nothing to lose !!

  • I take nexium i stopped for awhile and now my gerd is wrose then ever gives me chest aches so bad i go into panic attacks so id say if u find sumthing that works sick with it dont mess with the dose or brand or anything and test urself tosee which foods mak urs bad and avoid them or small amounts of them well i hop this helps sumone and feel free to add how i can help my chest ahes go away for good! wellgod bless

  • First, if you have these symptoms, you need to see a Gastroenterologists. I have GERD and have unfortunately had to deal with it for many years. The new generic for Prevacid does not work as well. If you are constipated you can use Miralex, being constipated or having IBS doesn’t help acid reflux. I’m now on Prevacid and Zantac, but often my chest discomfort cause panic attacks, so be aware of this as well. You may want to schedule an EGD (I just had one this week) and it will help determine if you have ulcers and even Cancer, yes, too much acid in your esophagus can cause esophagial cancer (check spelling?). As for your diet, you really have to do your homework, so many people have different views of what works and what’s not good for acid reflux; I’ve been keeping a food journal to help me determine when my acid is worst.
