How to Get Rid of Fear
Many people struggle to conquer or even face their fears. For some people, conquering fear takes nearly an entire lifetime, while others simply fail to deal with their fears at all. This gripping emotion tends to limit the actions of a stricken individual as fearful people often shy away from things or situations that show or remind them of their fears. Unfortunately, every person has his own set of fears. The thing in question is how to deal with them. Will you control your fear or will you let it control you?
Fear is an emotional response to a perceived danger. Oftentimes, people acquire fears from painful incidents, bad memories, frequently heard stories and social connotations. Some people get completely intimidated by their fears, which trigger episodes of anxiety, depression, panic and violence. These fear-related symptoms make the emotion pretty hard to shake off since each symptom has the tendency to absorb one's senses.
Fear may be hard to get rid of, but there are ways that you can control your fear until the emotion subsides. Through practice and a total shift in your state of mind, you can master your fears and eventually not let them affect you, unless it is absolutely necessary.
Question Fear
According to some philosophers, questions lead to only more questions and never the answers. In the case of fear, the questions lead to further questions until you realize that your fear is pointless. Here is the series of questions that you could ask yourself:
- What do I fear? - You can answer this question with a phobia or the things that you fear the most. (In case you didn't know these are Ten most common phobias)
- Why do I fear these things? - You can state all of your reasons why your fears are currently controlling a portion of your life. Most fears are ultimately rooted to the fear of death (Learn how to get rid of a fear of death), humiliation, failure, or pain, so your answers will probably fall under any of those categories.
- What can those reasons really do to me? Am I exaggerating my fears? - Aside from scaring you, you have to pinpoint the physical, mental and emotional effects of your fear's prime causes. Humiliation will probably make you bear an unfavorable image, while failure might make you realize that you are still far from your goals, in spite of your efforts. Pain will lead to broken or wounded body parts, which will then lead to even more painful operations. As for death, it is pretty much self-explanatory.
- What can I do to combat the root causes of my fears? - Notice that this question is much easier to answer after pinpointing the reasons behind your fears. Most of the time, people complicate their fears because they only focus on the negative sides of their feared things and situations. There are always good sides to any situation, you should learn to acknowledge them when they arise.
- Now that I know what to do, is there a reason for me to be afraid? - You can actually use your fears as a form of motivation. Until you work on the answers that you gave in the previous question, you will still be held by your fears but to a lesser extent. Fears are not resolved overnight, which is why you should work hard on the remedies that you provided for your fears. Eventually, you will get rid of your fears and strengthen your character.
- Humiliation - You can get your friends and peers to understand you more by opening up and showing them who you truly are as an individual. Give each of them the amount of respect that they deserve. Once a humiliating situation occurs, those friends of yours will help you recover and grow as an individual.
- Failure/Rejection – You must continue to strive until your reach your goals. Each failure is beneficial since a failed attempt acts as a guide on what you should and shouldn't do. Also, a failure will let you see other possible angles on how to reach your goal. Clearly, a failure is just as important as a successful stint, which is why there is no reason to really fear failure.
- Pain – The secret to repulsing pain is to check the amount of self respect that you have. You can denounce pain by focusing on your qualities such as your pride, your beliefs and your dignity. Of course, you will still feel every iota of a painful occurrence but you will take pain much differently. You will consider pain an honorable battle scar as you eventually strengthen your persona.
- Death – Among the four roots of fear, death is the hardest to deal with. Most people have an innate fear of the unknown and nobody is really sure of what's in store in the afterlife. The best way to deal with such a predicament is to fulfill your vows to yourself and to everyone that you hold dear. Treat each day as a platform to stamp a legacy out of your life so that you will not have any regrets. As the popular statement goes, you should live each day as if it was your last.
