How to Get Rid of Holiday Shopping Stress
It's the holiday season and everywhere you go, you see people carrying bags and boxes of gifts, trying to beat the holiday rush. The air is filled with Christmas songs while the streets are paved with slippery snow (if you're living in the northern regions, that is). The familiar images of mistletoe and the Nativity, as well as other Christmas decorations in stores and houses (Guide on how to make christmas ornaments), are all reminders that yes, the Christmas holiday has arrived and people everywhere are happy and relaxed, totally in tune with the season!
Well, most everyone, at least. For those who have lots of people to give gifts to, or the ones who wait for holiday sales to buy the things that they want, the holiday season can be anything but relaxing. To those who have experienced it, holiday shopping is one of the most common reasons for holiday stress. You try diving into a sea of shoppers on a limited supply of kitchenware, for example, and you will know why. The Christmas holiday is also the time when people get their Christmas bonuses so they have extra cash to spend, and for most people, it's usually spent shopping. Most stores also hold holiday shopping sales, so it's no wonder that during this time, every shopper who has held back for the past months suddenly appear out of nowhere like a pack of lemmings.
Kicking Away Holiday Stress
All of those mentioned above plus a few more can really cause an average shopper stress. It is no wonder that shopping for gifts and things during the season is one of the most hated activity of the holidays (Know the Top Ten Christmas Gifts). However, you really don't have to let it ruin your holiday. Holiday shopping stress can be eliminated if you follow several simple tips. Who knows, you might even come to enjoy it as well.
- Shop alone. When you shop alone, you won't have to worry about someone else sidetracking you from your purpose. While you do have the advantage of bouncing ideas off someone else, there is also the possibility that you'll argue about the kind of gift you will be buying, especially if you both are close to the recipients of the gifts. Everyone has their opinions but if you don't agree with your companion, what should be a nice and real short shopping trip can become frustrating real fast. If you really have to go bring someone along, then just limit it to one. That way, you'll only have to contend with him or her alone.
- Don't bring kids along when shopping. You know how little kids are when they're brought along to malls: they immediately go crazy either pestering you to buy them something or just running around like a crazed hamster. They're a distraction you really don't need, especially if you're hunting down that last bit of gift. Just imagine asking someone about a particular item while you have your kids screaming and tugging at your shirt or dress because they want that ice cream in the corner stall. It's enough to get your stress levels up. (Learn how to get rid of christmas stress)
- Have your shopping list on the ready. It's always great to have a purpose when heading out, whether it be discovering your destiny, or shopping. A list prepared in advance will save you from getting lost on what to buy and where to buy it. If you just go out and start shopping for the things that you want on the fly, more often than not, you'll end up being confused and undecided, not to mention always thinking about what it was you're supposed to get next. A list gives you a purpose and a goal, shaving off precious time as well as aggravation during your shopping.
- Avoid the holiday rush; shop in advance. One of the worst contributors of holiday shopping stress is wading through throngs of people who most likely have the same idea as you: get their holiday items before they're out of stock. As such, you will see people at their worst. Expect to be pushed, shoved, or otherwise cussed at especially if you both are after the same thing. It's enough to raise your stress levels to the roof. Add to that the fact that everyone's scent will be mingling, including their sweat, and you're better off just giving up. If you shop in advance, say weeks before, then you will avoid the mad rush. You'll maybe even get your pick of the crop.
- Limit your shopping items. Another contributor to stress is buying a lot of items during the holidays. Sure, it may not be avoided that you will buy more things than the usual but if you're going to go around buying everything that you want, then you'll end up carrying a lot of things. These will only add to your stress and frustration. As much as you can, limit the items that you'll shop. You can assign other shopping duties to someone else.
- Take the time to unwind after a hard day's shopping. Like any normal, stressful day, a few hours either lounging in the spa or just getting a massage will do wonders to your stress level. You don't even have to go to an expensive spa or parlor, actually. If a family member is good at massages, ask him or her to give you one. Conversely, you can also just lounge down on your sofa while soft classical music plays in the background. The bottom line is, just relax; you're no longer in the store, battling with the other shoppers.
- Shop online. The Internet is a great tool not just for getting information, but shopping as well. The advantage? You don't have to wait in queue to pay or run from aisle to aisle or shop to shop looking for a particular item. With a couple of mouse clicks and keyboard taps, you'll have that nice pair of shoes you want in a jiffy. And you can do it in the comforts of your own den, with a cup of coffee at hand. I am a huge fan of tip #7 and since a lot of online stores also have huge holiday sales, I have beed getting some great deals. I wanted to contribute to this tip, because I found an amazing resource that I have been using for my holiday shopping. I downloaded a toolbar from give2network.com, and then chose my favorite charity, and now when I shop online through their shopping page (which has a ton of stores I shop at) a portion of the purchases I make go to charity. I thought this was a great idea, and I wanted to pass it along to my fellow online shoppers. Happy Holidays!
