How to Get Rid of Greasy Hair
October 6th, 2008 by admin
Hair that looks oily, stringy, flat or lank is what hair consumers and hairdresses alike call "greasy" hair. If your hair is greasy, styling becomes challenging because the strands tend to clump together. Greasy hair is difficult to control but there are many ways to beat this problem --- all you need are the right products and enough discipline.
The Causes of Oily Hair
- Greasy hair is developed from the overproduction of a waxy type of substance in your body called sebum. Sebum, produced by your sebaceous glands, naturally occurs in your body and is responsible in keeping your hair waterproof, soft and supple. Your hair's greasiness is directly proportional to your scalp's oiliness. If your hair is fine, it means you have more hair on your scalp, paving the way for more sebacious glands.
- Your hair’s greasiness is directly proportional to your scalp’s oiliness. If your hair is fine, it means you have more hair on your scalp, paving the way for more sebacious glands.
- Aside from the overproduction of sebum, you can also blame your hormones. Hormonal changes can affect the state and development of your skin, especially during your puberty or menopausal stage.
- Perspiration causes greasiness. Wearing excessive makeup, being exposed to environmental toxins, smoke and smog can all contribute to oily skin. Everytime you go clubbing, you are increasing the chance of making your hair greasy since smoke-filled bars encourage grease and oil build up on your skin. The oil from your skin can then easily reach your hair.
- Clean your hair regularly to avoid dirt and the build-up of toxins. Take note of the products you use though. If you keep applying the wrong chemicals on your hair, expect your hair to be greasy. Thin or fine hair becomes oily when heavy conditioners are used. You can also develop greasy hair by using too much of a specific product on your hair, especially when you focus on using it in one area only. Expect your hair to be greasy if you use products with strong or excessive chemicals.

Why Your Attention is Needed
Chronic greasy hair may lead to other hair problems like greasy dandruff, scalp breakouts and potential hair loss.(Learn tips on how to get rid of hair loss) Greasy hair is categorized into two and these are as follows:- Greasiness from roots to tips with oily or greasy scalp;
- Greasy roots and scalp, while hair is dry from roots to tips.
Say Goodbye To Icky Greasy Hair
- You can buy shampoo formulas especially designed for greasy hair.To make sure that you get rid of the problem, focus only on the greasy areas. If you want to reduce oiliness and grease on your strands and scalp, apply the shampoo only on those areas. If greasiness is only on your scalp, focus on applying the product only on the scalp area. You should also use a different product for the other areas that are not greasy.
- Any unrinsed conditioner left on your scalp must be rinsed out. It is best to apply conditioner only at the tips or middle area of your hair to keep the chemicals away from your scalp. Substances contained in a conditioner can contribute to more greasiness especially if they are not rinsed throughly.
- Remember that hair products such as pomades and hair gels have many harmful chemicals that can make your hair greasy. Use these products only on special occasions like weddings, formal dinners, job interviews or TV appearances (For more information on occasions, read the guide to Occasions). To avoid using these products everyday, why not choose a hairstyle that can tame your crown? Use your face as a basis for the right hairstyle.
- Avoid combing or touching your hair obsessively because the bristles or teeth of your comb and your fingertips can transfer oil to your scalp. Once the greasiness gets in the scalp, it can easily spread on your whole head. Again, take good care of your hair properly and get the right hairstyle so you won't need to comb your hair every now and then.
- Some hairstyle trends can cause hair greasiness. The hairstyles you need to avoid are those with bangs that hug your forehead. When your hair comes in contact with your skin, or specifically your forehead, the oil migrates effortlessly to your scalp.
- Shampooing should be done everyday to prevent oil build up. Purchase products with labels like "oil controlling shampoo" or "clarifying shampoo". To achieve best effects, use a shampoo with cool or lukewarm water. Hot temperatures will make your hair greasy.
- Piling wet strands at the top of your head will only contribute to making your hair more oily. The transfer of oil becomes very easy and possible especially the oil that comes from your scalp.

I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH! Eating greasy foods does not have anything to with greasy hair! Unless you rub your fries all over your hair while you’re eating does not cause it to be greasy!
But what it good for greasy hair is vinegar. Get a cup full of vinegar before you apply the good smelling stuff and rinse your hair with it. Starting from the roots going down to your tips. This also can get rid of dandruff! And don’t us “Suave” or “Pantene”. Not only can that build up on your scalp but is also 3/4 water! And is only making your hair worse.
All paul mitchell products, sorry I forgot to mention.
Also, a boar bristle brush works to help exfoliate your scalp, they say your not supposed to waash it every day but I have to because of my oily hair… even though my school is against it I can’t help it. But like I said tea tree and boar bristle will totally do the trick. It eliminates overly greasy hair and you’ll be pretty happy after the first use.
Pantene and all those other shampoos and conditionerss that are sold in stores and not by a professional are super bad for your hair. Over time they will cause buildup in your hair. The shampoo removes all of the good oils and essential things from your hair while conditioner adds all this unecessary oil and chemicals. So in reality your just ruining the hair. If I could suggest something, id say to get the lavander mint tea tree shampoo and condditioner from shampoo, that or the tea tree special. The laavander mint will help rid your hair of build up and flakeyness. While leaving your hair feeling soft, healthy and shiny. The tea tree special does the same thing only it has peppermint extracts in it which leave your scalp a bit tongly, both are awesome products. And id honestly suggest them. And I’m positive they work because I go to a paul mitchell school and they teach us about this stuff
“1. Here’s the simplist- wet hair, rub a clear shampoo (eg. Pantene aqua-light or pantene ice shine) straight onto the scalp, then set a timer for 6 minutes. Once the timer goes, wash out the shampoo! If your hair needs maintaining then put a pea sized amount of conditioner onto the hair (NOT the roots). For best results, blow dry
this works because it gives the shampoo enough time to soak up all the oil
”
In other words… Gee, you mean… I should wash my hair? Thanks for the “expert advice” I never would have thought of it myself. LOL
I have tried dozens of different conditioners but the Hydrate Conditioner from Shielo Hair succeeds them all. I have found that many conditioners can leave your hair looking a little greasy and worn down, especially if you have thin hair like me. However, after using the Hydrate Vibrancy Conditioner I feel as though I have just stepped out of a hair salon to get my hair professionally treated. It always leaves my hair with more body & shine and it smells great too! You can truely tell the difference after using it just one time.
I had majorly greasy hair and I tried everything…like seriously, EVERYTHING!
this works because it gives the shampoo enough time to soak up all the oil
simples!
Then, I found a few effective remedies
2. This is a bit of a bazaar remedy, but it works! – use a facial wash that contains tea-tree oil. Tea-trea oil shampoo doesn’t really work that well for greasy hair (despite what you may have heard), but facial wash works SO well! I used T-zone tea-tree face wash and it worked a treat! Just wet hair, rub into the scalp, wait just 5 minutes this time. Then wash out
I had blonde hair that would go a murky blonde colour when greasy, so I used wash-in wash-out blonde some days to disguise the colour problem
I really hope this helps people cause it used to get me so upset!
Good luck x
Use antibacterial hand soap and scratch your head like u would when your head is itchy. Do this all over the scalp not just the greasy areas. Shampoo with antibacterial soap twice then use desired shampoo twice DO NOT USE CONDITIONER FOR IT WILL WORSEN YOUR PROBLEM. I guarantee this will work
I had a greasy hair for almost a year and finally after long research I know how to completely control it.
1-Keep you hair as short as possible.
2- Only use conditioner twice when you wash your hair.
3- Try to completely lay off greasy food and eat vegetables and fruits until
you feel a great improvement.
4-Start exercising few hours a day, your greasy hair means your body tries to tell
You there is something wrong with your eating and health.
Thank You.
I seriously just got out of the shower and my scalp is sticky! i scrubbed out the conditioner and rinsed out everything, i dont know why its so greasy. can someone leave a tip for me?
