Shoe Odor Removal: Home Remedies

If ‘kicking off your shoes’ at the end of a long day magically clears the room (and that’s a bad thing), we’ve got some easy, home remedies to get rid of your home-made shoe cheese. It’s important to remember that you’re not just combating a smell, you’re also combating living bacteria that produce the smell – if you just attack the odor and leave the bacteria then you’ve only fought half the battle. Kill the bacteria and then remove the odor. Here are some easy ways to do just that:
  • When you remove your shoes for the evening, coat the insides thoroughly with baking soda, seal them in a plastic bag, and put them in the freezer until morning. The cold will kill the bacteria, and the baking soda will absorb the odor. When you pull them out, set them in a well ventilated area for a while to dissipate any excess moisture that remains.
  • If you don’t have room in your freezer, pour or spray just enough rubbing alcohol into your shoes to coat the insides and then place them on their sides in a well ventilated (but unpopulated) area. The rubbing alcohol will kill the bacteria and evaporates quickly. Afterwards, coat the insides with a little baking soda (For other uses of baking soda, read how to make baking soda applications) to soak up any remaining odor or moisture.
  • If these methods leave you in the lurch, experiment with different products (usually powders and sprays) that are designed to eliminate foot and shoe odor.
Remember, it’s all about the bacteria! Keeping your feet and shoes dry will prevent it from growing, and cold or alcohol will kill it off quickly. Please leave any tips you may have using the form at the bottom of this page. MonsterGuide.net also writes a great article and teaches us how to cure smelly feet.

  1. My DPM introduced a method to me that beats baking soda, spraying and washing: He recommended a shoe tree that uses UV light to kill all bacteria. The shoe tree is called Sterishoe. This tree has removed the odor in some of my shoes in one day. UV light kills bacteria 100%.

  2. Put baking soda in your shoes. Add an orange peel if you want.

Hi All!! I saw this and wanted to tell you about this product I started using. It’s called B.A.D.

It works amazing and made my shoes like new!! I also use it on the rest of my gear, I won’t use anything else. I found out not only does it deodorize my gear, it also decontaminates it to the point where it even kills staff! This stuff is amazing, definitely give it a try, I live by it. They also have AutoVaccine and RoomShocker, I keep them all on hand no matter what, they have saved me a lot of money, time and stress. Good luck and enjoy!

    Hey folks,

unfortunately I’m an expert in the matter of foot and shoe care. I had so many problems on this topic. Foot smell, exessive foot sweat, even athlete’s foot. And I tried so many things… all the home remedies (vinegar, soda etc.) and purported miracle cures. It all costed me money, times and nerves. But finally I found a cure which really works after using it a few weeks: Insoles made from cedarwood (Manufacturer: Zederna.com). The wood absorbs any moisture. So foot smell has no more basis. These insoles are worth the money charged for.

do u put baking soda in the soles too?

  10. My husband suffered with really bad foot odour for years and tried everything you can think of and more. The only thing that works is Borax powder. Sprinkle a little in every pair of shoes you have and before you put your shoes on every day dust your feet with the powder. It’s inexpensive and is amazing for getting rid of all types of odours. Try adding some powder when you wash your carpets to illiminate pet odour you’ll never look bck again.
