How to Get Rid of Alcohol Addiction

Alcohol in small quantities is not a problem. In larger quantities it has huge detrimental side effects. These include things like malabsorption, chronic pancreatitis, cirrhosis of the liver, thiamine deficiency, and brain damage. Alcohol is also high in calories so tends to enter people's weight. Chronic alcoholism can also lead to permanent brain damage.

And if these damaging health effects are not enough, people under the influence of alcohol also have many other problems. They can range from DUI to violence, injury and a general lack of judgment. Pregnant woman can permanently damage their children–fetal alcohol syndrome is one of the saddest syndromes.

It is easier to drink nothing than to moderate drinking. This doesn't mean that there's anything wrong with moderate drinking–just that it's tougher.

There are a number of great books on how to kick alcohol addiction. It's a great idea to get a few of them. They all have different ideas and they all reinforce each other. Some books to consider include: How to Change Your Drinking: A Harm Reduction Guide to Alcohol, Freedom From Addiction: The Chopra Center Method of Overcoming Destructive Habits, 7 Weeks to Save Social Drinking: How to Effectively Moderate Your Alcohol Intake and Alcohol: How to Give It Up and Be Glad You Did.

The following are some ways to beat the alcohol addiction problem:

  1. Lead me not into temptation. Get rid of any alcohol around the house. Don't stop by any bars or taverns. Consider what friends you're going out with.
  2. Have lots of alternatives available. One of the most common and best alternatives club soda–it is 0 calories. Other juices and sodas sometimes also help.
  3. Alcohol addiction is about habits. Look at what you do when you drink. Modify what you do and you will likely modify what you drink. One great substitution is going for a walk.
  4. It's all about planning. If you're going to a party or a situation where you'll be served, plan in advance if you are going to drink and what.
  5. Change the words you use in talking about alcohol. Use the word poison ( and it is) instead of the word fine wine. Speaking about it in negative terms makes it less likely that you want to have some.
  6. Consider getting hypnotized or speaking to an NLP practitioner. Treatment like this is usually instant.
  7. One of the best proven programs to help people recover from alcoholism is Alcoholics Anonymous. It may seem embarrassing to join, but your health is worth it.

Conquering alcoholic addiction is likely one of the most important choices you will make in your life.
