How to get rid of Chafing

Chafing is skin irritation caused by repeated rubbing. It is worsened by sweating and by rough fabric.
7 Ways to get rid of chafing:
  1. If the chafing is caused by fabric or clothing against the skin, it can be easy to solve.  Wear different clothing and vary what is worn.  For example, if you usually wear boxers, switch to briefs.  There is also a great difference in the different fabrics.  Nylon and high tech running and hiking gear tends to rub less so causes less chafing.
  2. Chafing can be greatly increased by allergies to specific fabrics or chemicals.  So if the chafing is in the armpits, change the deodorant.  Change the soap used and the laundry detergent.  If wool irritates you, do not use wool.
  3. We can learn a lot about how to deal with chafing from runners and cyclists who often suffer from it since their skin repeatedly rubs together or against a fabric.  One thing they are careful about is making sure the clothing is tight.  This is why sports bras are tight.  There are many products in running stores to help chafing like nip guards. They also make sure the clothing is not bunched up or folded.  Slight adjustments in the position of the waist band or elastic can help.
  4. Chafing can be irritated by sunburn so wear sunscreen and clothes to keep from getting sunburned.
  5. Chafing is caused by friction so reducing the friction is a good way to reduce chafing.  This can be done with Vaseline or commercial products like Body Glide.
  6. There are a variety of over the counter salves and ointments that can cause relief and help with healing.  They include things like calamine and Ozonol.
  7. Sweat can increase the chafing so reduce the sweat by using powders - baking soda, talcum powder, cornstarch etc. Reduce the sweat by drinking cold drinks and taking cool showers.  Stay cool by dressing lightly and staying in air conditioning.  Antiperspirant can reduce sweating too.
