Firstly, let me clear something up. There is no such thing as a sea gull. There are many birds that are gulls but none are named "sea gulls." Most gulls, belong to the large family named Larus. The word Larus is from the Greek word meaning “ravenous sea bird.” The term “Seagull” can be misleading because many species of gulls live, feed, and nest inland. The most common gulls we have in the Uk are called herring gulls, but everyone still calls them "sea gulls".

Just throw a nest of barbed wire around the base of your chimney stacks,if they are in the habit of building them there. You will have dispensed with expensive chimney casings, ineffective spikes and unsightly wires plus the seagulls will have moved elsewhere.

Removing a nest will not work at all, they simply rebuild in a matter of days. Neither do spikes. They are way too powerful a bird to let a mere spike stand in the way of a des res. In fact you are doing them a favour as they use the spikes to bed their nest on top or behind your chimney safely. Visit gullguard.co.uk for solutions for just about everywhere seagulls want to nest. They are fantastic and all of their products are bird friendly. They NEVER harm the birds.

I live in the Algarve on a very attractive resort near the ocean. We have a communal swimming pool and 10-20 seagulls arrive every evening to swim in the pool and disgorge pieces of fish around the pool area and on the sunbeds. The pool area is too large for netting and spikes would not work because there are young children in the pool during the day.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
