Melted candle wax on your new carpet may look like a mess you’ll never be able to clean, but it’s really much easier to remove than you think.

How to Remove Candle Wax from Carpet, Furniture, and Clothing

This process will work to clean candle wax stains from any fabric at all - from carpets to clothing. You just need three things:

  1. An iron (A hairdryer will work in a crunch)
  2. Plenty of paper to absorb the wax (Paper bags work the best, followed by newspaper and paper towels)
  3. Patience

Follow these steps:

  1. Using an instrument with a dull edge such as a butter knife, scrape off as much of the hardened wax as you can and then vacuum it up.
  2. Place your absorbent material down over the wax stain. If you’re using paper towels, use 2-3 layers.
  3. Run an iron set on low (“delicates”) and without steam over the paper taking care not to burn the material you’re cleaning. You will notice the paper get darker as the iron melts the wax and wicks it up into the paper. When this happens, move the paper so a fresh area is over the wax and repeat until all of the wax is gone. If you’re removing wax from shag carpeting you may need to fluff and brush the carpet to expose it at different angles in order to get all of the wax up. Be patient and you’ll get it.
  4. If you’ve gotten all of the wax up and some color from the candle still remains, apply a spot cleaner and scrub.

That’s it! That’s all there is to it, you just need to have patience when dealing with a large spill and be sure not to burn your carpet, furniture, or clothing.

I spilled a lot of wax onto the carpet and couch (microfiber)when blowing out a candle when the paper label started burning into the lit wick. This process worked amazing!!! I can’t believe how quickly it removed the wax. Thanks so much for sharing.

“3. Patience” should read, “3. Patience, patience, and PATIENCE”

You’ll notice that after you’ve worked at a spot for a few minutes, the carpet gets warm. I’ve learned to walk away from a stain (more often than once) in order to let the carpet and the wax cool. The obvious reason for this is to not burn the carpet especially if it’s a lighter color like white or tan.

What you’re also preventing is the chance that the wax “stain” may heat up and sink further into the carpet. While you’re removing small slivers of the top part of the “stain”, the rest of the wax is heating up allowing gravity plus the weight of an iron to work against you.

  4. Vivian Says:

Put it in the freezer for three hours.
