Spilled wineSpilled some wine? Don’t fret, the mess may look horrible now but it won’t by the time we’re done with it.

Red Wine Stain Removal

While we were performing our research for this guide, and after much experimentation (and drinking) we came across a method of removing red wine stains that works so well that there’s little need to include any others. This method was originally posted at Strat’s Place by a wonderful woman who called herself Patty S. and said she picked up the method from a friend. Patty, if you read this, thank you for sharing this wonderful technique!

Patty’s Foolproof Red Wine Stain Removal Formula

SprayMix 1 cup water with 1/2 cup hydrogen peroxide, then add a little bit of soap. Regular dishwashing detergentworks, as does soap made for specific materials so use whichever soap is appropriate for the task (Want to make your own soap? Learn how to make a soap). Put the solution into a spray bottle and apply it directly to the stain. Watch as the combination of soap and hydrogen peroxide turns the red wine stain clear immediately!

This doesn’t actually remove the wine from your clothing and carpet; it just removes the color from the wine making the stain invisible. Incidentally, this formula works on more than just wine stains, we’ve tested it successfully on cool-aide, coffee, and tea stains as well.

We recommend that you send any clothing you treat through the wash immediately after treatment to keep the peroxide from bleaching your colors. If you applied this to non-white carpet and you don’t have a shampooer or wet-vac to rinse the peroxide out, blot the area dry with a towel, follow up with a spot cleaner and blot the area dry again. Repeat that last step once more.

If you're spilling wine, you're probably a big wine fan. Learn how to make wine.

  1. Anita’s tip of soaking stain in water overnight really works!! I tried other stain removal tips – salt, vinegar, some stain remover, and finally some enviromental dish detergent I had on hand- and nothing worked, only changed the colour of the stain. After leaving it to soak in water overnight as Anita suggested, I was thrilled that the stain was gone this morning!! Thank you Anita!

What will work best for getting rid of red wine stains on my coffee table. Should I try the HP, water and soap, or is there something specific for wood? It’s driving me crazy looking at it!

  4. I used the water, hydrogen peroxide & dish soap method described above and it worked perfectly! It was on beige carpet. There is a very slight pink color remaining but I will try the solution again after it dries. Thanks soooo much!

Wow, that peroxide solution worked wonders. I spilled a glass of red wine on my bathroom floor last night and some of it stained the white grout red/purple. I sprayed that on, went back to check on it 20 min later and the grout was back to white!

I had a red wine stain on a light weight cotton hoodie that I couldn’t deal with for 2 hours. Post-spill I dipped the hoodie in lake water and brought it home wet. I tried carbonated mineral water (didn’t have club soda) with no effect. Then salt. Then lemon juice. Then hydrogen peroxide. Nothing seemed to be working. Rubbed detergent into the stain and it was gone! Presumably one of these remedies “lifted” the stain but did not remove it. Moral of the story, try detergent last if nothing else seems to be working!

  7. SODA WATER. But don’t rub it, blot it.

cover stain with metho immediatly then light

  9. when its still wet use salt it lifts it so when it dries just get a damp cloth and itl just wipe out of the carpet.

  10. Just poor some cheap lemonade on it if you have some, straight away! then scrub for abit.
