Your boyfriend dumped you, and you’re miserable and devastated. You crawl into bed, weeping and hoping to get some shuteye. Instead, you don’t sleep a wink and just stayed up all night crying. As you see your reflection in the mirror the next day, you’re shocked: not only are you left with a broken heart, but you got red, puffy sore-looking eyes. How tragic.

Having puffy eyes is something many individuals experience. It can result from crying, or other factors like allergy, stress and hormonal changes. Puffy eyes aren’t dangerous, but they’re very uncomfortable and unpleasant to look at. While covering them up with sunglasses is a good tactic, it won’t work all the time. Besides, glasses don’t take the sting and soreness out.

There are medications that can help lessen eye puffiness and alleviate the sore feeling, but if you’re at home, you can try some natural remedies. Here are a few examples.

A Splash Of Cold Water

Most people get puffy eyes during the morning, after a sleepless night. Even if you’re not crying, and just working or studying, your eyes can get all sore and puffy when you wake up. Since you probably need to shower too, cold water might be the perfect cure for you. Rinse your face with several splashes of ice-cold water to ease your sleepiness and puffiness away. The cold water will help constrict the blood vessels and lessen swelling. Soon, your puffy eyes will go back to normal. You can repeat this tactic a few more times throughout the day, as often as you need to.

The Tea Bag Solution

Drinking tea is always beneficial for your health, but do you know that this soothing and delicious beverage works great for puffy eyes too? You don’t need to drink it to cure your puffy problem. Just place the tea bags over your eyes. Soak two teabags in hot water for three to five minutes, then take them out and let them cool, until they are warm to the touch. Lie down, put the tea bags over your eyes and then cover with a soft cloth. After a few minutes, remove them. Your eyes will be fresh again.

You can use either green tea or black tea for this method, as long as they are caffeinated. The caffeine helps lessen swelling and constrict blood vessels. Some herbal teas, like chamomile, also contain anti-irritants that soothe inflammation and redness.

The Cool Cucumber Tactic

Yes, cucumbers are said to help remove bags and wrinkles around your eyes, but do you know that this crunchy vegetable works just as effectively for sore and puffy eyes? Cucumbers have soothing astringent properties that are deliciously cool and soothing. They’ll work very efficiently for your tired, swollen eyes.

Get two fresh cucumber slices. You can put them in the refrigerator for a few hours, to enhance their cooling nature. Lean your head back, put a cucumber slice over your closed eyes and let them stay them for at least five to 10 minutes. Relax. The cucumber slices will heal your swollen eyes in no time.

Potato Power

Are you about to cook hash browns for breakfast? Set one of those tubers aside, since it can help with your puffy eye problem. According to European folk medicine, potatoes are effective in soothing headaches, painful joints and other inflammatory ailments. Their starch works as a good anti-inflammatory agent that’ll ease the pain from your eyes.

To start, peel, wash, and dry a potato. Get a sharp knife and grate the potato as fine as possible. Then, put the pulpy potato bits in a clean cloth, to make a poultice. Place this over the eyelids for at least 15 minutes. Your painful dilemma will be gone in no time.

Whisk Some Egg Whites

You know why egg whites are sometimes used as substitute for facial masks? It’s because they have skin tightening properties that are said to help prevent wrinkles from forming. Egg whites also work great for puffy eyes too, helping the skin tighten and lessening its swollen, painful look.

Get a couple of egg whites and whip them up in a bowl until they’re stiff. Add a bit of witch hazel. Then, using a brush, apply the egg whites under your eyes. Let the mixture sit and dry for a few minutes before rinsing. Your skin will feel tighter and less puffy.

The Spoon Remedy

Spoons are for eating, but they also do wonders for puffy eyes. Place four to six pairs of spoons in your refrigerator. When your eyes become uncomfortably swollen, take out two spoons and place them over your eyelids. The cold metal will help relax your blood vessels and provide soothing relief. When the spoons become warm, replace them with another pair from the fridge. Keep doing this until the swelling goes down.

Salt Does The Trick

If you think eating french fries shaken in salt will cure your eye’s puffiness, you’re wrong. Consuming salt-intense food can only worsen your dilemma. You need to use salt without consuming it. First, get 1/4 liter of warm water and mix 1/2 teaspoon of salt in it. Then, dip facial pads or cotton balls into the solution, and apply them over your eyelids, while lying down. Stay in this position for at least 10 minutes, making sure the pads are in place. When you get up, your eyes will be as neat and puff-free as before.

Drink Some H2O

While it might not seem directly connected to your eyes, water can actually help reduce puffiness. When the body is properly hydrated, it won’t puff up in the wrong places. Drink at least eight glasses of water daily, and refrain from consuming too much coffee, soda or sugary drinks. This will help you stay away from red and puffy eyes.
