Sore nipples can plague anyone at any time, regardless of your sex or age. The causes of sore nipples range from disease to irritation to overuse, and anything in between. Whatever the case, sore nipples are a serious drag. Breastfeeding mothers know this pain more than most! Luckily, sore nipples are usually not permanent. Read on to find some of the best suggestions for getting rid of sore nipples, based on the initial cause.

Consult immediate medical attention if the pain in your nipples does not go away after a short period of time. This may be a symptom of a serious illness.

1. Sore nipples from breastfeeding.

It is a perfectly normal reaction to have sore nipples during the start of your pregnancy, as your breasts are transforming in preparation for breastfeeding. If you have sore nipples during the breastfeeding process, however, it might be the case that your baby is not sucking or latching on to your nipple correctly.

There are several strategies to follow for getting rid of sore nipples when you are breastfeeding. Generally speaking, you should avoid wearing a bra when you are breastfeeding to avoid irritating your nipples (or your baby. Or your partner!) Let your ladies be free!

2. Be sure to breastfeed frequently.

Your baby becomes more aggressive if they are fed infrequently. Hungry babies make for tender nipples! Try to breastfeed at least every two hours; you might need to do so more frequently in some circumstances. Your baby should gently caress your nipple with their mouth, rather than making a meal of it.

You should also try and elongate your nipples before your baby begins feeding. Pump your breasts for a few minutes before your baby begins to feed, and your nipples will elongate accordingly. Their little mouths will have an easier time latching on as a result.

3. Use the least sore side.

This might seem obvious, but you want to give your sore side a rest to give it some time to heal. Direct your baby to the correct nipple!

4. Take some painkillers.

In serious cases you might find that you need some painkillers to help dull the pain. Tylenol and Advil are advertised as safe for breastfeeding, but there are also a variety of natural alternatives that you can try instead if you want to be as safe as possible.

5. Apply a warm compress.

Treat your nipples well! Applying a warm and wet compress to your nipples after you breastfeed is a great way get rid of any soreness while preparing yourself for the next session.

6. Apply some breast milk.

Breast milk is a great source of vitamin E, which is known as a healthy vitamin for your skin. Keep your nipples moist with a small amount of your own breast milk to help avoid any soreness down the line.

Please avoid using vitamin E capsules on your nipples at all costs. The natural alternative is much more effective! Vitamin E capsules are toxic for your child.

7. Don’t use bottles.

Baby bottles encourage poor latching practices from your child. If you switch back and forth between breast and bottle-feeding, you are asking for a case of sore nipples. If you can, stick to breastfeeding whenever possible!

8. Getting rid of thrush.

If your nipples begin to feel sore very suddenly after you have been breastfeeding for weeks (if not months), you and your child might be experiencing thrush, which is a common form of yeast infection. This yeast often appears in a series of white patches around your baby’s mouth, or as a form of diaper rash.

9. Use a vinegar solution.

One of the best ways to get rid of thrush is to use a vinegar solution. Mix a teaspoon of white vinegar with a cup of water, and wash and rinse your nipples with this solution.

Once you have applied this solution, dry your nipples and apply an antifungal cream that will help kill the yeast. Expose yourself to as much open air as you can to help get rid of the moisture that is helping the yeast survive. Being naked is super fun anyhow, so what’s stopping you?

10. Eat the right foods and take the right medication.

Taking a series of acidophilus medications in a day can speed up the time it takes to get rid of your infection. You can find refrigerated capsules in most health food stores.

Garlic is your best friend when you have thrush! Not just for vampires anymore, garlic can help boost your immune system and fight your yeast infection. Cook with as much garlic as you can, or try using garlic capsules.

Yeast survives on sugars, so limit your sugar intake. You should avoid artificial sweeteners all of the time anyhow, but this is especially the case if you have thrush. If you must eat sugars, be sure to eat non-sweet foods along with them to help lessen their impact.

It is also a good idea to avoid eating dairy products for a few weeks after your symptoms have died down to help make sure they don’t suddenly return.

11. Getting rid of jogger’s nipples.
